I posted this in the predator section before I found out about the bigfoot area.

I recorded this unusual howl the other night in Central Illinois. I wondered what you guys thought about what kind of animal it is. I have had people tell me coyote, fox, or wolf but it doesn't sound like a coyote to me.

Listen to your own coyote sounds on your site. There is one of them that is as close a duplicate of that as my ears can tell.

What kinda sound recording equipment do you use to record all the sounds you have there?

Graybeard,

The recordings were made in the field using a Marantz PMD 670 solid state recorder and Audio-Technica Pro 37 R cardioid condenser microphone.  The recorder leaves a lot to be desired as far as background noise in the pre-amps.

For a more thorough description of state-of-the-art field recording you can check out my Sound Recording Equipment page at:

Well from what I can remember it is close to what many others have said they heard and recorded. It is very close to what I heard myself many years ago.
I have heard countless coyotes over the years and this sound just stands out as not them. Just 2 nights ago I had a large pack wake my up (I was staying at my uncles house in Indiana) right out side the window. Between them things and his 3 dogs I do not think I slept a whole night in the 9 days I was there. Every night them damn coyotes would start their crap and then my uncles dogs would start going nuts as well. One night it sounded like at least 20 of them out side my window.

Anyway if you listed to what people say is a Bigfoot recording and play a coyote recording with it you can hear that they are not really that close at all. I guess it could be a coyote with a deeper voice as well as a sore throat or something.

The depth of of the howl actually sounds like a rabid timberwolf. Do any of you remember the movie "An American Werewolf in London"? The werewolf's howl on that movie was a recording of what a timberwolf in the final stages of Hydrophobia actaully sounds like.

I once heard that exact howl (from the movie) when camping in Northwest Alberta one summer. As soon as I heard it, a picture of the marauding werewolf from that movie snapped into my mind, seconds later reality stepped in and I realized what I was hearing.

Here is a link to the sound off the the movie:

HHmmm, almost sounds like a cow at night bawing (as we always called it).

At least where I grew up, cattle would make diffrent (mooos) at night, but this seems to flow and longer than a cow.

Very strange.

Here's my take. We have only been getting coyotes in my neck of the woods in recent years, so I'm no expert. I don't believe in Bigfoot but am open to the idea if given solid proof. I've heard cows sounding similar at night but not like that. So that leaves me saying I have no idea what that is. Huh

Sounds like a coyote howl that is distorted by the recording.

Sounds like a guy with what we used to call a bull horn. You take a hide from a coon, or groundhog and stretch it inside out over a box like an oatmeal box or a coffee can and bind it around the outside with string and let it dry, and then you poke a small hole in the center. Take a short piece of rope and thread it thru the hole, tie one end to a small tree and rosin the dried hide up and down the rope.... makes the awfulest sound you ever heard, and you can hear it for a mile. Get up on a ridge at night, and hit it a few times, and watch the lights come on in the houses.... Grin

I think it is people attempting to do animal calls. Especially the coyote like call late in the recording. As far as I am concerned you recorded people doing animal calls, nothing more.
