Walnut Box

I've got some walnut from a dead tree found on my daughter and son-in-law's acreage. Two pieces have been made into gun stocks and there is enough good wood for two more gun stocks. There was this piece which was too thin for a gun stock except for maybe an old .22 rifle. I decided to make it into a box instead. It is about 12 inches long. I hired the woodworking done as I have no woodworking tools but was there the whole time and decided where each piece should be cut. Here's a couple photos and the sketch is my original design. The actual box is wider than what's in the sketch because I didn't have the wood in front of me when making the sketch. I put the finish on it which is several coatings of boiled linseed oil followed by a few coating of Birchwood Casey.

Beautiful. and a little unusual, something you don't see every day.

That is some of the most gorgeous walnut I've ever seen. I whittled on some and what not, that is just plain awesome looking stuff. I leve about 40 miles north of the gun stock Capital of the World, the Lincoln/Warsaw area of Missouri. That piece of wood you have there is as good as some I've seen from there. Enjoy it. Take care, John.:tango_face_smile:

Here they are, at least if the upload of the photos worked. The Sheridan pellet rifle is one my brother and I had as kids. I fixed it up with the new stock and a rebuilt with the "steroid kit" for a grandson. It is accurate and delivers over 12 ft-lbs energy at 40 yards. A gunsmith did the fitting to the action and I did the shaping and finishing. The other is a Thompson-Center TCR-87. Several barrels go with it including a 12-ga shotgun and a silenced .220 Swift. The stock was ruff cut by a stock place and finished by a local stock guy.
