We had lots of puma in California, black bears too. Neither are much of a threat to humans. They are VERY FAR down on the lists of dangers to humans. They are not very aggressive. Kids more likely to be attacked by someone's family dog. In California we lived in town about a block from supermarket, senior center, public library, etc., Our house was on an unfenced one acre lot and we would occasionally see them or their tracks as they followed a small stream that passed nearby.
