"It was at 125 yards that Micalah got off her first shot, into the lungs. The buck ran about a hundred yards before she decided to fire a second shot that pierced the buck’s neck."

Like I always say... the 243 makes a fine coyote rifle... :

Two years ago I was hunting with my boss. He shot an 80# doe and it ran almost 200 yds. He shot it with a 300 Weatherby. The off side had a 6" hole. It destroyed both lungs and the heart.

Where is the ammo?

This year I shot four does with a Win Mod 70 Classic Featherweight in 270 cal. They were (in order) 155, 25, 135, and 145 yards. Each was in the neck. None of them took another step. They don't take it well in the neck. Good rifle. Predictable reloads. Sturdy rest. Careful aim. Breath and heart under control. Easy pull.

Ain't much you can do about adrenaline. At 40 mph, a deer can cover 200 yards in about 10.2 seconds. Adrenaline will easily last that long. Only sure fire way for DRT is a spine or brain shot. A dead deer can run a long way.

You made old Jack right proud.... If I was forced to hunt with a bolt gun, my first choice would be a model 70 featherweight. But I'd rather hunt a lever myself.

I can't count the times I have killed whitetail with a 6 mm Remington with one shot to the engine room. you do your part the 243 will do its part.

I shot an axis buck with a 308 two years ago and he ran 60 yards and jumped a fence with a blown up heart and a broken right leg. : Guess you need a 300 win mag for whitetail.

or else...................

i don't shoot deer in the neck.
wastes too much good meat.
same as does high shoulder.
ruins the backstraps, the meat
of kings.
