Default Fox Bait

I have some Venison[Ground & Steaks], and would like to make a good fox bait, for next season. How could I make this? What should I add? Can it be tainted?? How long? Sorry for asking so many questions, but I need to learn how. Thanks for any help!-- :-) David

I prefer to taint bait for canines and bobcat. Not rotten, just tainted enough that a chunk of bait is stinky but still pink in the center and then preserve it at that point. Adding some ingredients to the bait such as glands, musks, essential oils and exoctic powders will definitely increase its effectiveness and appeal to the animal. For example, one might add ground beaver castor, about 1 to 2 ozs per pint and create a curiosity appeal to the canine. Generally speaking, the more ingredients added, the better and more effecyive the bait becomes. A simple favorite formula of many old time fox trappers was to add either anise oil, honey or both to the bait. A favorite formula of old time Michigan coyote bounty trappers was venison tainted and aged with beaver castor, coyote urine and asafoedita powder. One would have to experiment with a few different formulas and ingredient amounts to find the right formula for them. Ace

Dave, the first thing I would do is to make sure the use of venison for bait is legal in your State. For example in Pennsylvania it would be illegal.

Good point Old Coon, i'm really slipping tonight not to mention that. Using any game animal to bait another animal is illegal in Michigan too. Ace

Asa, Oldcoon, do those laws apply to processed meats? If that is true a bunch of commercial baits and lures would be illegal. Just curious.

Processed and commercial products may be used in Pennsylvania. However I do not know the laws in other states.

In Pennsylvania, if I'm reading the 'book' correctly, yes you could. Again, I can't speak for other states.
