bullet choice for 357 mag
I've never used my 357 caliber contenders for deer hunting, as our seasons coincide with bear. I've packed 7-30 Waters, 44 mag or 45 colt in that order.Several years ago at a gunshow, I snagged 60 DoubleTap factory loads (3 full boxes) at a reasonable price. I would use them in 357 in a pinch as my first choice. You may think this is a bit crazy but they are: DT Huner, 200 grain Hardcast Solids (a trademark of DoublleTap), with 1310 fps reported from a 6" barrel. From a 10, 12 or 14 inch closed breech 357 mag or max Contender, they would work well for any deer or bear in Oregon. I have found them to be accurate, and have stashed at least 35 of them for a rainy day!
