Texas ranger commemorative Colt from around 1970. The real ivory grips were an option. So detailed it almost looks fake doesn't it? Reminds me of the cap guns I had as a kid. It's got some sort of silver leaf finish that isn't plating. It was my Grampa's gun and at some point he wiped it down hard enough to rub off a piece of the finish on the barrel. I've debated sending it back to colt to have chromed or silver plated since the original finish is compromised.

Thanks, I looked it up the other day and found that link. Back when I inherited it from my Grampa I had looked it up and found a lot more info including the weird silver finish. Normally I wouldn't question just leave it, but since the finish is messed up it is no longer mint. That and the idiots at the gunshop I had it sent to (had to in order to legally get it from out of state) cut the zip tie off of it and cycled it enough to leave marks on the cylinder... The finish is soft enough that you can literally scrape it off with your thumbnail if you want to since apparently they figured they'd never get shot or handled much. Since the value isn't there anymore other than as a fancy shooter it seems a shame to just leave it in the safe all the time. Here's a pic of the damaged area. There is a dark area where the barrel meets the frame, and on the ejector housing the finish is missing near the frame and turns wrinkley where it is lifting off but still there. He had showed it to me around 1995 or so from where he had it squirreled away in the basement ceiling. I think the improper storage is what caused the issue. He had another cased set of engraved Hipowers that the pearl looking grips were falling apart. He was able to find an original set of those though.

It is maybe what is called a 'coin finish'??? Silver plate is soft. Sad about the shop cycling it, completely unprofessional, especially on a collector grade firearm.
Ive been around a bunch of 'old stuff' through the years and 1)condition is everything, and 2)original can often be more valuable than a refurb. This may take some time but it is only original ONCE.
I say get a nice heavily tooled Tom Threepersons holster with a very mild cant and start looking for gun friendly BBQs to get invited to (we're doing our Wisconsin version as Fish Fry Rigs this year).

Moleman -

That is a beautiful Colt SAA, and I have news for you. Even with the slightly compromised finish, that gun is not "just a shooter". It is a real Colt with full coverage factory hand engraving, and ivory stocks. It is quite valuable to the right person. Refinishing, even from the factory would not increase its value, and probably lower it. If you were to take a dozen or so detailed, high res photo's of it, and post it on a sight like Gun Broker, I think you would be surprised at what it would bring.

cwlongshot -

Aint no flies on that flat top USFA either. That's a gun I should have bought back when they were still making them. Can't afford one now...

Bigeasy, I would have to be in a world of hurt to ever consider selling it or his plain jane Rem 1100 with a yellow label maker strip on the forearm with his name embossed in it. The sentimental value is more important to me but I don't want to wreck it either. My Grampa was pretty upset when he found the damage and had told me once that he was thinking about sending it back to Colt, but was at a point in his life where it just wasn't feasible.
