research shows:
For the record Dillon packed a Colt single action model 1873 71/2 inch barrel in 45 caliber. It was an actual antique made in 1895, not a modern day copy. When it sold at auction along with the gun and holster were papers from Stembridge stating it was the gun used in the series along with an affidavit from James Arness himself. It sold for $15,000.00.
Wow!

Think twice, shoot once...

whatever revolver it was, it was sure a tough one. he busted many a bad guys head with it.it seemed like he would kind of palm the whole gun in his giant hand smak it upside the bad guys head, end of fight.

the only thing tuffer than his revolver was his right and left arms. he was shot in the arms in so many episodes that they would of looked like swiss cheese in real life.

as a side note i once rode on a stage coach with festus when i was about 8 yrs old.in dodge city kansas.

very nice feller.

I read online somewhere that Doc Kitty and Chester (or was it Festus) went around doing a vaudeville act in the offseason after every years last episode to make some money on the side. Gene Autry used to do a large show with lots of horses and costumes in between movies.

This is kind of late to the thread but Festus certainly had an act in the off season. He appeared for several seasons as our local rodeo mid-show act along with his mule. He was a huge crowd pleaser and was really missed when he quit coming. Lots of people attended the rodeo just to see him and he always finished his act with "Tumbling Tumbleweeds". I don't know the why or wherefore for the change but after several years Dale Robertson replaced him. What a dud compared to Festus and one show was all we had to endure of him..

Kitty was married to a wealthy t.v. producer, so I would be surprised if she needed money in the off season.

Tragically, he was bi-sexual, and gave her AIDS before anyone really knew what AIDS was. She died a slow death from the disease.
