Default Matt's Handgun On Gunsmoke

Howdy! Just curious, but what caliber was Matt Dillon's handgun on the Gunsmoke series? Was it a 45LC? I remember that it had a distinct different sound when fired from the other handguns used by actors in the show. Your views appreciated! Always, Gene

.45 Colt but like all other movie/TV show guns was fired only with blanks. I believe they have a five in one blank that works in guns chambered to the .45 Colt, .45 Schofield, .44-40, .38-40 and something else maybe .44 special.

Graybeard, you got me scratching my head about the name 5-in-1. I had to look it up. The cartridge fit Winchester .38-40 and .44-40 rifles, and .38-40, .44-40, and .45 Colt revolvers. The modern ones also fit the .410 shotgun, for whatever use that would be.

I think I remember some articles back in the 80s that said that Dillons gun was a 45 colt Great Western. Have to watch next episode and watch the hammer. The Great Western had a frame mounted firing pin rather than hammer mounted as the Colt. 44 Man

MOst of the movie and tv show guns were great western guns. The typical gun was a great western with fake stags on it. As a matter of fact theres collectors that will pay near colt prices for them set up like that.

The 'gunfire' we hear on TV and movies is not the actual gun going off, it is dubbed in sound.

.

To quote James Arness, regarding a question as to what guns he used on GUNSMOKE:

I carried a Colt SA .45 and a Model 94 Winchester .30-30.

There are replicas of these guns available from America Remembers, and you can see them on my website.

I noticed it had a screw jn the bottom of the grip, never saw that on any of my single actions.

A screw in the bottom of a single action grip frame is typical of a two piece grip frame. This allows you to use one piece grips that use no screw or escutcheon through the middle of the grip.
