I was looking at new inexpensive pump guns. At first I was set on an 870 express, until I came across the Winchester SXP for a similar price. The SXP looks like a nice gun. Anyone have actual experience with one?
I don't own a Winchester but did buy a Remington express because there are a lot more aftermarket items for it such as tube extensions with out having to also buy a barrel as with the 500 mossy scope mount to fit with out having to have it drilled and taped plus made in the USA not sure on Winchester just to name a few but they will all go boom so it boils down to what do you wont to use it for and your personal likes.
Well if you just wont a nice shotgun to hunt with go with what you like every one is different now if you wont a real fine Winchester go with the mod. 12 vent rib old mod. for a shotgun that retailed for around 120.00 will now cost you around 1200.00 and up. My first mod. 12 cost me plain barrel full choke great gun the sum of 85.00 new out the door wish I had it today. I still see some of the old 97 mod. at gun shows but they bring 300.00 plus.
Have you looked into any local auctions? I needed to unload some inherited guns about three years ago. One was a 95% condition 60s vintage 870 in 16ga. with vent rib and nice wood. Went for $185. About the same time at anther auction I bought a vintage Ithaca 37 20ga. in nice honest condition with a butter smooth action for $180. You are not going get that feel and quality in a new shotgun in those price ranges.

My brother had one and didnt like it at all, traded it off after two seasons, I wasn't a fan of the SXP either. For an inexspensive pump I'd suggest a Benelli Nova, used they run $275-$300, extremely dependable.
Today I shop used when I want a nice inexpensive gun. Many times even being used they are far better than a new one where they have stopped refining the actions to save money.
I will also vouch for this gun shop, having bought several shot guns and rifles used from them.
You just need a FFL holder in your area.
I would even be willing to go check out a shot gun if you desired, for you. But you can believe what they tell you about the gun.
I always say get what trips your trigger as not every one likes the same things.
Ive owned Benelli super Nova, several Rem.870s, and now have a SXP. I liked each one of them and all served me well. Go try them all out and pick the one you like best or buy one of each!
Stumpjmpr: if you would like a 16 go over to the,16 ga society, cruise the adds. you can probably find what your looking for in your price range if your patient.
