Default i'll never learn

a good friend that's a retired senior master
automotive technician had a saying about
certain cars:
that thing rattles like a tap dancer on meth.

that describes the scope on my .444 that i was
just bragging on 2 weeks ago, a n.i.b. K-4
that is the 3rd scope that's been on top of this
rifle since i got it back from H&R when they had
to replace the faulty barrel under warranty.
i've never had any luck or gotten any kind of long
life out of any scopes other than a leupold, and
every time this happens, i swear i'll never buy
any other brand. i missed an easy shot last evening
at a doe that wasn't even 50 yards away. i kicked
up dirt about 4 feet from her feet. i'm just glad i
didn't wound her because i'd have felt really bad.
i did go look for blood j.i.c. but she was ok and
standing about 80 yards away looking and trying
to figure out what that loud noise was. i did also walk
over to where she had stood to look for blood j.i.c.

another lost opportunity because of a faulty scope.
i guess i'll never learn.

I learned years ago to buy used Leopold scopes when I saw em in pawn shops. I would then send them back to Leopold sayin check it out. They always rebuilt them and sent them back. I let a couple go in trade and am down to two. A Vari X III 3 1/2 to 10, and a Vari X II 2 to 7. THEM IS NOT FO SALE.
You can buy more expensive scopes, but I don't think you can buy better ones.

I have had bad scopes of every brand I`ve ever had, including Leupold. I have a 24 power target scope to send them now, a 16 lb. rifle fell and landed on it. I also have a 2 1/2 x 8 X handguns scope that I bought used and would not hold zero when I bought it. That`s not to bad out of the over 60 Leupolds I`ve owned. With Burrius I had 3 put of 5 bad scopes. Tasco I`ve had 4, I think, and never had one that was alright. I`m sure I will own more scopes that are not Leupold, but them will come on a gun I buy, and will come off if I plan on using the gun.

i know there are many here on gbo that
have had great luck with inexpensive scopes
and i'm sincerely happy for them.
i've just never had luck with anything but a
leupold or a weaver, now weaver is on the list.
i've missed several deer because of defective
scopes, now this one. i've been lucky in that
i've never made a bad hit on one because of
a scope, just clean misses.

A good scope can last a lifetime. I have yet to outlive one.

IMHO leupold are best and they stand by them as said before. I have tried others like weaver and Nikon but I have never been let down by Leupold optics.

Sounds like you underestimate your comprehension ability.

i have some other rifles i can use
until january 2 when b.p. starts.
and a shotgun or two. the .444
will have to wait for a leupold to
put on top of it. (if i keep the gun)

Mount them in Burris Zee Rings or properly lap the rings. Never-Ever use a windage adjustable rear base ring set.

yes a modern scope can last a lifetime but seals in the old ones can dry out. Ive seen lots of the old k series weavers that the seals dried out and gas was gone long ago. Many of them with yellowed lenses too. Ive even had leupolds from the 60s and 70s dry out and leak. Put what you want on a gun but theres no way I'm trusting a 40 year old scope on a gun (unless its been rebuilt) on a gun I'm hunting big game with and sorry to all the fans of cheap scopes but if it doesn't cost at least 200 bucks its not going on one of my guns that I have to trust to big game hunting. Big game hunting is expensive and success rates are low these days and I sure cant afford to have a hunt ruined but a cheap or old defective scope. The newer k series scopes aren't a bad scope but the older ones don't comapare in any way other then nostalgia. Single coated lenses (and uncoated on the inside). They were a great bang for the buck in there day but that day has long passed. Truth be told that 4x tasco in the blister pack at your local Walmart for 50 bucks is hands down a better scope then then a 40 year old k series weaver.
