When you go to a restaurant, give zero tip. Then also give money equivalent to a good tip along with a note that says "This is not a tip. It is a personal gift, and is not subject to state or federal taxation."
I've worked in places where bonuses were similar to tips distributed to the entire restaurant staff. It's called a "communistic pool", where individual performance is diluted. At a restaurant, I prefer to tip the individual, and I want it to go entirely to that person, not a bus boy or a dish washer.
Bob, I hope you're at least "playing the game" when you go to a restaurant with wait staff by tipping. That's the way their wages work. It assumes tips. I would say that I rarely tip, but that's because I rarely go to restaurants where there is wait staff. Even Panera is asking "Do you want to give a tip" when you're paying. My answer is always no. That's fast food, and I go there BECAUSE there is no tipping expected. If tipping were expected, we'd go somewhere else. While I like Panera, they are easily replaced.
I base my tip on the quality of the service, not the quality of the food. If the waitress/waiter does a good job they get a good tip. If the food is bad I don't consider it the wait staffs fault - I just don't go back there again.
Very rarely do I ever leave a "tip" in one of those communal jars. You know all the employees aren't equally deserving of a tip and it just irks me to think I'm rewarding someone for substandard performance. Sort of like giving money to a wino on the street corner!
What little I know about how tips are divided, the kitchen staff gets a part of the pot( pun intended)
