7mm-08 rechamber
« on: March 07, 2012, 02:22:35 am »
Can the 7-08 be rechambered to 284 winchester?

What would be the advantage or disadvantage of doing this?

I thought there was a chart for 4d reamers that said what you rechamber to, i couldnt find it?

There was a chart there a short while ago, but I can't find it either.  If all else fails, give them a call.

Link below to The chart is still there it is buried in the website.  Just click on all the internal page links and you will eventually find it.  IIRC, it is in one heading title INFO or information.

Something tells me no...  I am not positive. There is such a chart on his site or maybe it's in the paperwork Fred included in a rental...

But I will say, the 284 is a debated rimmed case. This will present some problems for a single shot with extractor/ejectors like we have. I'm not sure there is enough "stroke" to properly function a rebated rim case.

In any event the sharp shouldered 284 won't do anything the 280 cannot.( it suffers from cap loss when loading the SAMMI legnth. But in a SS one could load it long enough not to effect case cap as long as the throat was long enough.) To my mind allot of effort for such small returns. Aside from having that caliber in a handi, there is no real "upside"

Jason,
I've had the same thoughts previously. Steve's cartridge charts help me determine what might work. I think if I were to do a full rechamber of a 7mm-08, it would be for a 7x57R or 7 Mauser Rimmed. ;)

The 4D rechamber link is in our FAQs, key word rechamber. The Ammoguide rechamber guide says it's doable.  ;) The 7x57Ackley is another one that can be done.

Dinny,
I know the chart says 7Mauser, but for some reason, I didn't think you could rechamber a 7mm-08  to a 7x57mm Mauser.  I'm sure I read it some where on this forum.  Am I wrong?

I believe that was the reason, one of our members did a stub job for a 7mm Mauser.

Ham7777 did a 7x57Ackley out of a 7mm-08, the 7x57 won't clean up the shoulder of the 7mm-08, but the Ackley will, the AG rechamber guide confirms this, no go for the 7x57, but yes on the Ackley version.

The 7Mauser case is .430"W at 1.724"L and the 7mm-08 is .454"W at 1.56"L. Given that the 7Mauser case is tapered, it would be real close to .454"W at 1.56"L. Maybe I'm not seeing everything involved, which is entirely possible for me. ;)

Good luck, this isn't the first time it's been discussed, AG says it won't clean up the shoulder, Fred doesn't have it listed on the 7mm-08 rechamber either, just the Ackley, should be a clue for ya.  ;)

I've had that done many years ago to a Ruger 77. Depending on what you got other then the reaming, the rails may have to be opened up a bit. Mine shoots great and certainly is a step up in power from the 7mm-08.
