Remington and 357 max brass
« on: April 18, 2012, 08:01:09 am »
So I sent Remington a email asking when they were going to do the next run of 357max brass.  I actually got a response the next day saying this:

"Mr. Pendley, Unfortunately, at this time we have no plans to manufacture 357 maximum brass.Thank you"

So I followed up with a email asking if they meant no more brass in the near future or ever, and got the following response.

"Unfortunately Remington no longer manufactures cartridges or brass in this caliber. For additional assistance you may wish to contact the following companies that specialize in older and obsolete ammunition."

They had links to 4 places all of which of course have no 357 max brass.

I emailed starline and asked again if they ever planned on making 357 brass and told them what Remington had said.  They replied they were having a hard time keeping up with what they were making but would add it to their list.  They also said they would consider it if enough folks asked for it.

Is this a common response from Remington?  Did I just get someone that doesn't know or are they really not going to make 357 max brass again?

May be time for a bunch of us to start emailing starline with a request.

damn! finally jumped in and bought a 357 barrel imediately reamed to max and now waiting trying to find brass! this is not good news. How about someone posting a sticky to get a list going from everyone to forward to manufactures? Quantity i can order depends on price, but would like to aquire at least 250.

I'm sure it will be a seasonal run thing done every couple of years.  Keep an eye out at gun shows, I found two 50 round bags from a vender last year, spendy, but I got em anyway.  I would love to see Starline pick it up, if everyone who has a Maxie would put in a request, they sure might move it up on the list.  DP
Handi's:22Shot, 22LR, 2-22Mag, 22Hornet, 5-223, 2-357Max, 44 mag, 2-45LC, 7-30 Waters, 7mm-08, 280, 25-06, 30-30, 30-30AI, 444Marlin, 45-70, AND 2-38-55s, 158 Topper 22 Hornet/20ga. combo;  Levers-Marlins:Two 357's, 44 mag, 4-30-30s, RC-Glenfields 36G-30A & XLR, 3-35 Rem, M-375, 2-444P's, 444SS, 308 MX, 338Marlin MXLR, 38-55 CB, 45-70 GS, XS7 22-250 and 7mm08;  BLR's:7mm08, 358Win;  Rossi: 3-357mag, 44mag, 2-454 Casull; Winchesters: 7-30 Waters, 45Colt Trapper; Bolt actions, too many;  22's, way too many.  Who says it's an addiction?

This is from another forum:
   "
Remington told me the more people call, (because they have a tally card to keep track) the quicker the brass will be made. 1-800-243-9700. When you call, these are the prompt numbers you will need to press 4-1-2."

When I saw this thread I called. I was told that they no longer have a part number for Maxi brass which says no more seasonal runs; but the guy said he had been getting a lot of calls and it might change.

I believe they'll make a run for Midway, I'd bet they order enough to meet Rems min quantity, Midway has it listed for expected delivery of July for boxes of 100, 500 & 1000 and August for 2000.

I may go ahead and backorder 500 from Midway.

Does Midway chrage you when you place the order, or do they wait until the item actually comes in and gets shipped to you?

Maybe if a bunch of us go ahead and backorder some, the order will get filled.

Cabela's still has 357 Max brass as "backorderable" with a ship date in 1 - 2 weeks.  Although they said the brass would arrive in early April a month ago.

I played the waiting game as well with Cabela's back in 2010 and right after I recieved my order the "out of stock but backorder OK" went back up.

But, didn't we have this same concern before?

Maybe I'll add more to my new backorder. Seems to be a good commodity to invest in.  ;)

Was considering reaming to Maxi. Glad I didn't.

I reamed mine to maxi and got better accuracy with mag loads because the throat taper is better... just fyi.

Is that improved accuracy real or imagined? I can't say one way or the other, but it makes no sense to me. It seems to me that reaming the case area longer (to Maxi dim's) and using magnum cases in a Maxi chamber would give more "slop" area for the bullet, if that's the concern. Now moving the bullet out to get closer to the rifling lands, thus lessening the bullet jump from cartridge case to lands, does make sense to me. Not doubting you, just trying to make sense of that notion.

Its all about the throat........well, really about how your bullet of choice fits the throat. Even if its a bit long, if it is the right diameter and leads into the rifling nicely, the accuracy starts there.

C'mon, didn't we all know that the Max is a semi-obsolete cartridge, sort of like the 41 Mag ? Good brass lasts a long time, just keep looking and buy as much as you can afford when you find it.
The demand for 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45 ACP is probably so great that the manufacturers aren't going to be in a hurry to make a limited run of a cult classic cartridge.
But if anybody does, I hope it's Midway. I was either lucky or smart enough that I bought good supplies of 357, 41, and 44 brass from them. I am still shooting most of that brass, and have been ever since they stopped selling it.

Doesn't make sense to me either.  But I'm not doubting the fellas.  I use to shoot PPC, and the wad cutters were more accurate than the semi-wad cutters.  The principle is the same about: more "slop" area for the bullet, but dang if those wad cutters weren't  lot more accurate.
