Has anyone necked the 7x57mauser up to 338? I saw the idea on Chuck Hawks website and thought it was interesting. If anyone has, what are the ballistics like? I aggree with him that it would be a swell close range deer-round.

I would say that was too close to the standard 8x57mm Mauser to make much difference....yes, the 8MM Mauser makes a great "swell close range deer-round". I just don't see enough difference to justify a special ordered reamer, dies,gunsmithing, and a  barrel and a "wildcat" cartridge to be in order......

Buford:  by 'close range' you mean 3-400 yds?????  Geez, the 06 takes Moose and Elk out to those ranges and the 8mm is just as good.  Is 3-400 yds close enough???????  Mikey.

If you actually read the article, O'Conner didn't really build one, he just proposed it.
And Chuck Hawks' article only expanded on the theory, he didn't build one either.

That said, I'd say you're solidly bracketed between whatever a .338-06 and a .338 Federal can do, depending on what pressure level the thing is loaded.

Personally, as interesting as it sounds, I'd have to agree with Buford: you're so close to a 8x57 there's little point in going that route.
Other than the usual justifications for going wildcat, if the scads of 700 classics in 8x57 for sale don't get you excited.
