H&R 58cal conversion

I have found a site that sells a mag-spark and a H&R huntsman conversion.  The magspark is $15.00 and the conversion is $10.  What is the magspark?  I know the breech plug and the nipple on my threaded 58 are sperate.  Would I only need the conversion since the nipple can be taken out?  Is the magspark the breechplug?  I wonder if anyone has bought these.  I just bought a used 58 and the nipple clears the action, but when I put a #11 cap on I can't close the chamber   I pulled the hammer just far enough to let the chamber close.  That means the hammer is sitting right on the #11 cap.   I don't like that at all   What should I do??  I thought this conversion or mag-spark will take care of that problem.  Thanks everyone!

never heard of them..........the old model actions like on your 58 have no transfer bar and a lower hammer...there is a notch in the hammer to prevent the hammer from hitting a live cap.....these are what most of the eaily made guns had...kinda iffy if they work at all........also check the firing pin spring to make sure it ok ..lots of these springs break and colasape with time.........to see if the notch is working try with gun open and push on hammer to see if the firing pin pushes out past the reciever??jb  another thought.if you are worred of the firing pin hitting a cap unless you change the inside parts you will have the same problem with any cap or primer,,,,,,,how ever you can change out all the insides of you gun to new style with a transfer bar and not have to worry about it at all.........i might have all or most of the parts here.........i love the old style myself and usally change new to old to get rid of transfer bar and the high hammer,,,,,pm.me if you might want to trade internial parts...jb

I have two of the thangs with the threaded breech plugs. Converted both to 209 shotgun primers and they work perfectly and they shoot well.

Your breech plug should screw down enough to clear the primer nipple or you can grind a little off to obtain the needed clearance you are speaking of needing. I would change them out to the 209 primers and be done with it. If you can find a TC 209 primer it will screw into the breech plug and makes for an easy conversion.

I just picked up the H&R 209 conversion nipple.  It was about 10 bucks.  I have not had time yet to install it from hubbardsoutdoorproducts.  It should take care of the problem.  If not I am waiting for Don to make me a new breech plug that has the 209 primer already installed.  Thanks for the info everyone

I have a .58 with the push-in breechplug. Here's the Hubbard's 209 holder and the the modification I did on the plug.

back end w/Hubbard's 209 holder in place(hex recess at start of flash channel to install/remove w/allen wrench)


powder well- I hollowed the front out into a conical powder well... eliminated almost completely blowby into the standing breech area, should afford more consistant, thorough powder burn as well... better flame front, less fouling.
