Just got home from trading with ccoorreeyy for his cut down 45-70. This baby is SHORT. I've got some Remington 405 gr SP and he was kind enough to give me a box of Hornady 325 gr LeverEvolution rounds. Which of these, or any other factory ammo, will work best out of the 16.5" barrel?
Will certain powders burn faster and be more efficient out of the short barrel. I am not set up for reloading yet, but I have started gathering supplies. So I'll be asking more about that and utilizing the search function in a couple of months.
I can't get the camera to download right now, but I'll post a pic of it next to a regular length Handi. I'm already developing a flinch just thinking about the recoil!

Get a box of factory (slow loads) to get familure with the gun, that way you don't develop a flinch. Then get a good manual that shows lots of loads for the 45-70. Not a Nosler manual since they only show one load for the 45-70. There is fast burning powders that can compensate for the shorter barrel. Might want to check out some T/C Contender/Encore loads since the Contender/Encore comes with short barrels too.

I'm not really too concerned about recoil when using a standard factory load. Between the two choices that I already have, which will do better in the short barrel. This gun is just gonna be a do everything rifle, but it will be the back up while hog hunting, in case the pistol jams and the pig is pissed.

Ok, here's the picture. Now I have a question. The short one was manufactured in 2001 and the long one was 2006. The newer one has a large pin on the right side of the receiver just above and in front of the small pin at the front of the trigger guard. The older one doesn't have this pin. It does not go all the way thru to the left side of the receiver like all the other pins do. Both rifles are 45-70s and both have ejector barrels. So what does that pin do?  Thanks, Jon |

It's just a plug for a viewport for checking latch engagement during barrel fitting. H&R started using them in the last year or so.

blackplague14 I think your barrel are extractors being that new.That short barrel looks cool.My NEF 45-90 WCF needs a short side kick like that in a 444.When ever I can get my hands on one.Dave

No, they are ejectors. I knew the older one would be. I had been eye-balling the new one at the gun shop for about three weeks and finally picked it up for a look over. Once I saw that it was an ejector barrel, the wallet just jumped out of my pocket. I still haven't had the chance to shoot either of them. Once turkey season is over, I'm going to sight in the shorty for close range hogs.

Are my eyes fooling me or is that camo lam checkered? When I got mine the lady a H&R said they didn't make checkered straight grip lams. Nice rifles BTW

The checkered straight grip camo lams have been available, they may not make it now, but they have made em in the past. She could also have been mistaken or misunderstood too, wouldn't be the first time! I have a checkered set of cinnamon straight grips that I got off ebay.  Tim |

My 45-70 was made last year and it has an extractor.Ejectors are cool,but my 45-90 brass is a buck a pop I don't need to lose any of them in the woods.That's cool you found an '06 with an ejector.Dave

Its a Limbsaver recoil pad. The LOP is short, even short for me and I usually like the feel of the youth or entry stocks, but the gun is small and easy to carry around.
I just measured, length of pull is 11". Standard LOP is a little over 14" and I think the youth stocks are around 12".

Buy a Lyman reloading manual . Read it cover to cover , more than once , if you are a newbie . Unique and 2400 are faster burning pistol / shotgun powders . They should burn pretty well in a short barrel , but may not give as high velocity as slower powders in longer barrels . Wyr God bless |
