385gr Rem Core-lokt in .500 S&W

Did a little investigating for you handloading Indiana hunters on the only inexpensive jacketed semi-spitzer bullet made for the .500 S&W, the Remington 385gr CoreLokt Ultra bonded, same bullet that's used in the Remington saboted shotgun slug ammo. I couldn't find the BC of this bullet, Remington doesn't list it, neither does Midway in their specs, but I did find this blurb in a Chuck Hawks article....

The 12 gauge Core-Lokt Ultra sabot bullet is a .50 caliber, 385 grain HP semi-spitzer. The catalog MV is 1900 fps and the 100 yard velocity is 1648 fps. The ME is given as 3086 ft. lbs. and the remaining energy at 100 yards is 2325 ft. lbs. The trajectory of that load looks like this: +1.8" at 50 yards, +2.4" at 100 yards, and +/- 0" at 150 yards.

Using that info, I used an online BC calculator and came up with a BC of .285, ran that thru Sierra Inf and it seems close, maybe just a tad high since I don't know what the drag function value is , that remains to be seen as a reality, but the numbers I got for trajectory look like it would give good range compared to other bullets and pistol chamberings, particularly the downrange energy. I know that a healthy dose of Lil'gun will push the 350gr XTP to 2150fps, and Buffalo Bore's 400gr JFN did 2035fps for John Taffin in his 500 Handi, so I don't think it unreasonable to expect 2000-2100fps out of the 385gr Remington bullet, here are the numbers....

  Those were the first bullets I hand-loaded for my .500.  Accuracy wasn't good with a starting load of H110.  The next bullet I laoded was the 275 grain Barnes with a starting load of H110 also and they shoot into the same hole at 50 yards. When deer season is over I'll play some more with my .500. I don't like to make too much noise here shootin' guns because I bow hunt  the back 40.

 I also have some cast 440 grainers with Tite Group loaded up to try,, someday..

Every load I've tried with Lil'gun has shot 2" or less at 100yds, even the 700gr Ranger Ricks at 1430fps. One issue that may be a problem with the Rems is consistency, I measured a couple at .5015" which should be good for my bore as it slugs  .5015 -.502" in the grooves, if they're all that size that is! I think if you push them hard, they'll shoot good, but most folks don't like the recoil of the hot loads.

Who's afraid of a little recoil?  Not me!! I loaded up a doz with H4227 and another doz with Lil-Gun.. gonna see what the handi likes...

I have 30 rounds loaded up with Lil'gun in groups of 3 in ½gr increments, may shoot em Wed if I don't go deer huntin.

I do 5 in 1/2 gr increments, my self. I start with a clean barrel, I shoot two, just to foul the bore. Then shoot 3 for group. Allow to cool and repeat.  Inbetween is where the 22's come in.
