Contender Carbine 30-30 question

I was thinking about getting one for my 10 year old daughter for deer hunting. My question is, what is the recoil like in such a light rifle?

My ten year old son is shooting my 30-30 G2 with Remington managed recoil bullets and doing excellent with it. Recoil is very mild with the managed recoil bullets.

I would have to say it depends on what length/style of barrel you get. I have a Contender 30-30 with the 23" bull barrel, it is very pleasant to shoot...



But - I don't think too many 10 year old kids would like to carry it very far in the woods.

The same gun set up with a Super 16" barrel (closer to 18" with the brake) is a joy to carry...



This one is a 45/70, and should not be given to anyone not ready for a good kick when it's fired - but you get the idea.

If you reload, you will find that the 125 Nolser BTip is a good way to go. Even though this bullet was designed as a varmint bullet, at .30-30 velocity it performs well on deer. The recoil of this load is very light and the extra velocity gives a flatter trajectory with a range of 200 yds or slightly more.

If you don't, this setup is still a good choice with 150 round nose loads.

Like Leon stated If you handload you can load pointed bullets for the 30-30 for use out of a single shot rifle (never for a tube feeded  firearm)

You will have a much broader selection of bullets

Just another thought, but here is an idea if your are a reload-er. I built this little Tender for myself with my grand children in mind also. It is a 6.5JDJ with a 20" barrel. With Nosler 120gr B-Tips it is very mild on recoil and a deer killing machine.
