I have a couple questions about H&R single shot rifles

Well, I am looking to get a .22Mag single shot rifle to match my Ruger Single Six when I go our varmint hunting.

Now, I have my eyes on a H&R Sportster, but I need to know a couple things about it. Here we go..

A) What is the average accuracy of these rifles? I am assuming it is high due to the simplicity of the rifle, but I am looking to do up to 200yd shots on coyotes and other varmints. What results have you guys acquired on this rifle in terms of accuracy? What ammo does this rifle seem to like in .22Mag?

B) I want to buy one gun, but several barrels. Can I swap off the barrel and shoot shotgun or any other centerfire/rimfire cartridge in this particular model? If not, What H&R model can accomplish this?

C) Most of the barrels come drilled and tapped for scope mounts, correct? What scope mount works the best for these rifles?

The rimfire frames will only work with rimfire barrels, the firing pin is in the wrong location to work with centerfire chamberings even if the frames were meant for centerfire rifle pressures which they aren't, you'll need to find one of the rare 3 barrel combos to be able to use one of the offset bore rimfire barrels on it, they only made a few, so you'll have to be real lucky for that to happen. Welcome Aboard , the 22 mag is one of my favorate rifles - have 3 , i use mine mostly for tree rats and p-dogs and get good results out to the 125 / 150 yard range with both Win and Rem ammo , none of them do well with the CCI's

As Tim said you can not swap CF rifle or shotgun barrels on the Sportster frame , sorry but thats just how their made . I like the standard H&R scope mount also the Weaver mount works well .

Just my 2 cents worth. Coyotes at two hundred yards is going way beyond the parameters of a 22 mag. You might want to consider a small centerfire round. If you don't reload then you might want to look at the 223. You can ammo for that relatively cheap. Dave

Yeah....what NAM70 said. 200 yards for the 22mag on a coyote just won't cut it. You may hit the dog....but that will be the last time you see it. And chances of him dying from the shot are slim. If you don't reload, the .223 is a better option (yeah..NAM70..what he said). Even if you do reload, you may want to consider the.223....or for longer coyote shots, look at the .243.

I have the 22 mag Sportster that I use for fox hunting. It's also seen groundhogs, crow and raccoon. All of those under 100 yards.

I consider the effective range of my 221 Fireball to be 200 yards, for clean kills on ground hogs. I agree with previous reponses re: 223.

I use a .22 Mag for coyotes but 100 yards is the max I would use the .22 Mag on a coyote. I also have my .223 which I feel confident with at 200 and a little over on coyotes...as has been said it's not only hitting them but humanely and quickly ending their existence....<><....
