Yes, it is a good lube for cap and ball revolvers.

However, Crisco is also a good black powder lube, and you can buy several pounds of it for the same price 4 ounces of the commercial lubes cost.

At the top of this forum, there is a sticky entitled "Proper use of a cap and ball revolver" posted by Gatefeo.  In section 9, he tells you how to make a great lube, which duplicates the commercial offerings, at a fraction on the price.

Will the Crisco or Bore Butter lube would work okay with Triple 7 powder?

I shoot a few cylinders with the stuff (I'd rather use the wads)

I bascially dug it out with a screwdriver and applied it that way to keep my hands clean. Worked well and bullet impact was the same as the wads. So I really can't complain

I love bore butter for use on the arbor, especial of colt types, but for over the ball lube I generaly use a swipe of crisco.  You don't have to fill the chambers up flush, after the first shot most will be blown out anyway.  Just a good swipe and your good to go.  I've never had a chain fire from the front side, and don't think it's posible with properly fitted balls and chambers that are round and not egg shaped.  I have had a chain fire from the cap side.  No damage and not hard to dig the ball out of the loading leaver.

I love the smell of bore butter, very good lube too. What I don't like about it is that it in the summer it melts and gets too messy. It would be great if it would stay in a paste up to 90 or so degrees.
