I am wanting a slug gun. Useful for deer hunting, zombie plinking, TEOFWAWKI, and possibly home defense.
The choices I am limiting myself to are 3 used guns in local stores. Your mission, should you care to accept it, is to voice and opinion on which is the better buy:
1) Remington 870 Express, 20" rifled barrel, receiver D/T for weaver rail, 2-7x scope, lightly used, $400.
2) Mossberg 500, combo, 20" rifled barrel & 28" screw in choke barrel w/3 choke tubes, lightly used, $250
3) Winchester 1300, cylinder bore, rifle sights, $150
Thanks, y'all!

The Mossy is priced the same around here. I have 3 moss 500 and use them a lot. Never had an issue. That remmington sounds a little high. Although they are good guns. I have no experiance with the Winchesters. i am biased; GET THE MOSSBERG! Lonny

I would go for #3 as you also mentioned self defence. You need a smooth bore to shot buckshot or bird shot effectivley. And I bet if you test a few different brands of slugs you will find one that shoots very well. Plus with the 100 bucks you save you can buy lottsa ammo.

I avoid the Win 1300s like they were the plague seen too many problems with them to ever trust my life to one in a defensive situation. While I'm not particularly fond of Mossbergs I really don't like the 870 express all that well either. My advice would be to go with the mossberg as more suited to your stated purposes.

If you wern't limited i would say a new rem. 870 turkey gun with rifle sights and tapped for a scope mount and an extra screw in rifled choke tube . that said the 870 ! then switch bbl's .

Well, I waited 24hrs and went back to get the Winchester, but of course it was too good of a deal and someone else is now happy with it. The Mossberg ain't bad, tho I want to be able to put a magazine extender on, and can't do that with them. The 870 is all Remington, as far as I can tell. Scope didn't have a name on it.
Looking at some online auctions right now, just 'cuz the local stores don't have what I am looking for, or are asking more than I wish to spend.
Thanks, y'all!

My personal preference would be the 870 but the price isn't that good. If you could haggle them down $50 or more, it might be worth it. Here is one brand new for $336. You figure drilling and tapping plus mount is around $50. Basically, you are getting a free no name scope which is worth anywhere from nothing to $75. http://www.impactguns.com/store/SS-95575.htmlI'm not a mossberg fan but of the 3, I would go with it if you can't get the price down on the 870. If you don't need the extra barrel, maybe you can sell it and use the money to get a scope.
