Iz it broke?Huh

Been so quiet in here I figgered the board waz broke 'n' nobody could post.

Bein both curious 'n' mouthy, I jist HAD ta find out if it's still werkin

Since I'z got yer attention, I have seen reference to using "2 Oz. of powder per inch of bore diameter". I think the reference waz to the N-SSA but I can't find the original document.

Is that 2 Ounces by weight? Or 2 fluid Ounces (volume)?

CJ,

Go to the top of the forum and look at the posting about cannon shooting safety and click on the two links in that posting. Those links will take you to sites that give you the  formula for loads.

I have been looking for a site that tells how to make cartridges.  Use be that the powder was put in plastic sandwich bag and then in heavy duty tin foil to maek cartridges.  No loose powder.

Black powder is measured by volumn, put away the scales.

Yup, that's one of the sites whar I saw "2 Oz. per inch" but it didn't say whether it waz 2 FLUID Ounces (volume) or 2 Ounces avododruos (or howeverinhell ya spell it) - meaning mass or weight.

If ya say "put away the scale" then it's fluid ounces - good nuff!

In my humble (but accurate) oppinion, it would be avoirdupois.  Although powder is often measured volumetrically the common designation would be ounces with fluid ounces being used only for liquids.

A unit of weight in the U.S. Customary System, an avoirdupois unit equal to 437.5 grains (28.35 grams).

However you do raise an interesting issue - how many ounces does and ounce of powder weigh?

Cannon charge weights are determined per the safety rules as 2 oz of Cannon Grade black powder per inch of bore diameter. This by weight-avoirdupois-16 oounces per pound.

The only (albeit minor) exception is that you buy a 1 lb can or 8 lb keg of blackpowder.  Otherwise I agree in volumetric measurement being the standard.

For the small mortars we locally use 35mm film cans as units of measure.  Don't know how many ounces or how many to a pound, but it is universally available form of measurement.
