Since many expressed an interest in the .35 Whelen over the .35 Remington, how many would be interested in it if Remington can resolve the no fire issues with it?

I'd buy the barrel and build a rifle, but I'd rather buy the whole thing factory fitted.

I have not voted yet, because unlike the 17 Fireball or 35 Remington, I already have a 35 Whelen barrel. I have not tried factory ammo in it, but I use Remington brass for my reloads, and have yet to have a FTF. Granted I have not shot it alot, but I have went through a box of 50 bullets, with no problems. However, my barrel is a 22". If the barrel offered was a 26" one, I would probably sell mine to buy the longer one.
It seems to me if Remington is going to offer new accessory barrels, and they still have to be factory fitted, why not just do like T/C and offer a list of cartridges they can chamber for, and charge more for the service? It would seem they could keep a number of barrels in each caliber on hand, and then just chamber them in the chosen cartridge when submitted for fitting. Might take a little longer, and they could charge a little more for the service, rather than trying to keep a number of each barrels on hand in each chambering. Maybe I don't understand the manufacturing process they have, but i wouldn't think doing the chambering at the same time as barrel fitting would be too hard. Just as an example, they could just keep 35 caliber barrels on hand, when a rifle came in to be fitted for one, fit it, then chamber in the buyers chosen cartridge. They don't have to do one-offs or wildcats, but doing it that way would make more people happy and keep costs lower I would think. They could still offer barrels that are sold as complete rifles, and sell them as accessory barrels at lower prices. This would probably cut into the custom gunsmith work, but I would hazard a guess that it would increase their barrel sales greatly. Call it the Handi Custom Shop. Billy
BTW, I would rather have a 338 Marlin Express(rimmed case)!

I voted yes because I think the 35 Whelen is a fine and would love to have one.

I didn't vote, since I already have one, but I do think they should make it again.
Tim, how about another poll on the 7x57? I would vote yes yes yes on that one.

I got a real soft spot in my heart for the 7x57 my self, I'd get one to go with the other 7mm's I got in Handi's. A 338 would be more my choice for a more powerful cartridge than 35 rem instead of a 35 Whelen. DP

I cant vote here because it depends. I already voted yes to a 35 rem, but if they only offered the 35 Whelen then I'd buy that one. I guess as a handloader it would be better to go bigger and load down. Just wanted to put that out there. I really only hunt deer and smaller so the Whelen is over kill for me. But if they made it again..... ;)who knows. Jerry

I Voted Yes ..
Like stated it is truely a dangerous game cartridge and a compliment to the handi line up .. 24" to 26" would do well .
In all honesty i would be very interested in a 338-06 should that become a reality for the same reasons as the Whelen (though the Whelen holds nostalga on its side)
And iron sights would be a great option on this barrel.

I like the idea of the Handi Rifle Custom Shop, but that may be too far from corporate thinking. I voted for the .35 Whelen and I'll add one more thing. Chane the rate of twist to 1 turn in 12 inches, just like Ruger has done with the new 358 WCF and .35 Whelen Model 77 MkII. It will then stabilize the 275 through 310 grain bullets better, and give good accuracy with the lighter bullets as well. To me, the .35 Whelen shines with heavy bullets, and I don't consider it over kill on deer. A clean kill with little meat damage on deer, caribou, and moose, makes it a great all around big game cartridge.
AS far as a dangerous game cartridge, PLEASE, do your homework, and test all your selected bullets in your favorite test medium before going after dangerous game. All .35 caliber bullets are NOT created equally.

I would welcome the 35 Whelen back with open arms into the barrel accessory. As would a 338-06, 338 Fed., or the 358 Winchester would be as well..... -Aaron

I think .45-70 rates as a dangerous game round also. I'm glad somebody else FINALLY said it. With handloads getting really close to 458Win velocities, there's no reason the 45-70 can't kill anything/everything on the planet.

A lot of us want something larger than .30 not in a straight case. One of the .33's, or .35's would fit the bill. As for a custom shop, the Handi is still a lower end rifle so has to appeal to budgeted shooters, that also limits chambering in out of the ordinary calibers. This means, (in order) Whelen, .338 Federal, A-Sq.,.358; the .35 Rem is a reasonable option for those who like .30-30. How long is it now taking to fit a barrel, and at what cost? That is another consideration.
I still wish they would bring back ejectors for "hunting" rounds, maybe offer extractors on rimmed, and eject rimless.

I would buy one in a heartbeat.I seem to have the need to purchase new rifles about this time every year.I told my wife this morning when I saw this thread that its a done deal should H&R start producing the Whelen again.Have yet to get a 35 caliber gun yet and that is one of the missing links in my safe.

I would love to have one. I was about to buy one(when it was offered), then I heard about the flaws. I wouldn't mind the 338-06 either if it was offered. I wish they would offer something soon, as I am getting the itch to buy another barrel.

I would buy one, if you think of the gap from the 30-06 to the 45-70 there is nothing else offered that is a really good choice for large game animals at say 200 yards and beyond. Im talking Elk sized game, in a non magnum round and something not a wildcat or exotic, what else in a common chambering is there ? Maybe a 338 Federal but even that is less known than the Whelen. I say bring it back, I would like to see it in a 22" barrel w/ sights and in 24" w/ scope rail. Jedman

I have one from the REF run, and it has brought down Moose, Caribou, Two black Bears, and one Grizzly. While the 30-06 is good, the .35 Whelen is better for large dangerous game. The 45-70 is also good, but lacks the range and velocity of the .35s and .30s.

Sweet, Thanks for the update Tim. I might need to hold off getting a 357 in Handi (Have a 1894c Marlin) to ream to 35Rem then. A Whelen sounds like a better option with a little more giddy-up and bang-flop ability. -g

I realize that worst case scenario engineering could take forever, but does anyone have a feeling for what a best case scenario would be for time line to prouduction? Thanks Don.

Well wouldn't you know I voted No, before I saw the update. But it wasn't to stop it from production as it was because I am just not interested.
I voted for the 35 rem cause i like that round and can use it here! But I am on the lunatic fringe in these parts. I dont really need more gun than that, most feel a 30 30 is enough. Now they shoot a little of every thing but it is bigger or smaller no middle of the road stuff.

After using the 35 Whelan Inproved for 25 years, I would state that it come as close to being the all around mythical round as any thing out there. Especially now with the wide selection of 35 cal bullets.
