I voted yes, but to be honest, I could see more use for a stainless/synthetic .358 Winchester or .338 Federal with 22" tube for 'up here' in the black timber chasing critters through the thick stuff...and a tang mounted hammer-blocking safety for 'snap shots'.
If not a Whelen, how 'bout talking the 'Big Green' into a .350 Remington with 24" tube???

Look for the next update towards the end of April, we should know when they'll schedule production by then.  Wink

Testing of 35 Whelen barrels will occur in the next two weeks, by May 15th, they will give the final decision on manufacturing it.

They're making the decision on the Whelen today, whether it will go into production this year isn't for sure yet.

The 17FB got the axe the end of March as far being available this year.

Tim

I just got an update on this barrel project, doesn't look good, maybe if a distributor would special order a run it might happen, but it's definitely not gonna happen this year as an accessory barrel.  Cry

I voted for the 35 Whelen.  I don't know that much about twist rates and bullet weights but I (as a hand loader) would love the opportunity to load .357 pistol bullets at low velocities for plinking and short-range target work.  Then load up for more serious work.  Whatever caliber that would let me do that (35 Whelen, 350 Rem. Mag. etc) would get my vote and my money.  I think it would be much easier to find and re-form 30-06 brass to 35 Whelen than any other case in the 35 cal. catagory.

Got an update, they're several weeks behind on the testing, blanks were delivered from Marlin last week and are being turned into barrels this week, should be in live fire testing next week.

Tim,
Is this a definite, or are they still deciding that now? Do you know if they intend to keep the .35 Whelen as an accessory barrel or if they will run it as a new model rifle?  Stainless?

Thanks, Dinny

is  there  a rimmed 35  out  there??

would that be a better round

the old 348 Winchester would be about the closest.  Not sure if anyone still make this round.   My grandpa had one of the old Model 71's and he hunted bear and boar with it.  I know when that bullet hit it anchored the beast in front of it.   Not sure what happened to the rifle.

Depends on how the testing goes,  but they're definitely going that far, hopefully in a 26" barrel.

Testing has begun, they've built 30 rifles so far, each will get 100 rounds, then 100 more rifles will be built, more info when I get it.  Wink

Just got another update, unfortunately it will be a 22" barrel, but there's a possibility that it may also be offered in longer barrels later.  Wink Wink Wink

The 35 Whelen is made to shoot .358" bullets, you'd have to find out whether it will shoot .357" bullets accurately, but there is data for pistol bullets out there, the Lyman 48th lists the Hornady 158gr at about 1600fps.

It started out just as an accessory barrel request, but it likely will be a complete rifle at first if all works out, the Mississippi (and possibly the Louisiann if they change their regs) primitive weapons season market is a strong driving force in the available chamberings that H&R would produce, enough that they'll make 130 firearms just for testing, testing is ongoing right now, hopefully they'll finish in time to market them for this year's season.  Grin

The Hornady 125 grain XTP

This is a pistol bullet, intended for the .357 magnum and .38 Special calibers, but they work in the .35 Remington as a super varmint scatterer. My guns really prefer the 158 grain bullets over the 125’s in terms of accuracy, but I didn’t have any on hand and decided to just shoot what was on my shelf. I wound these up to 2600 fps and let fly at the fifty yard books, which made quite an explosion. Two shots. one in the top and the other in the bottom, would completely annihilate a phone book, leaving a hole you could darn near stick a fist into. Soggy wads of paper were blown everywhere. These bullets at close range are about as explosive, if not more so, than the plastic tipped varmint bullets, since pistol bullets will expand at a lower speed than the more pointed plastic tip rifle bullets. These were launched about 600-700 fps slower than your typical .223 prairie dog load, however. There was an intact bullet at the bottom of these large holes, which penetrated six inches, destroying the first two books and were found in the very front of the third book. They had expanded nearly flat and had a fair amount of lead still attached. If your rifle will shoot these with decent enough accuracy I guarantee no woodchuck would survive a hit with one of the 125’s, and placement doesn’t have to be that precise to ensure an instant kill. The critter will be torn in half, if not pureed. If your gun will not shoot the 125’s, the 158’s will probably do much better, and the explosive effect is still there. Certainly there are much better varmint guns, but sometimes it is fun to put the old deer rifle to other uses
