6mm Rem Improved, I have two of em, a thumbhole 243 Ultra and an Optima Elite, I bought Mac's custom Hornady 6mm Imp hydraulic form die and the matching chamber reamer from him last year, traded the reamer for two rechambers from Wayne last fall, but haven't shot either of them yet, hope to shoot them as soon as the weather cooperates, I've had 87gr Vmax loads made for them for 3 months. Would a rechamber to 6mm Rem work, or would it not clean up the old chamber?

6mm-06 would take it a little farther. DP

6mm Rem won't clean up the existing 243 chamber unless you improve it.

The 6mm-284 fits right in there , runs in the same pressure range , same case head size and would clean the chamber nicely , just not a whole lot out there that can be been done with the 243 due to the case size and bore dia.

6mm-06 sounds sexy. Maybe I should have picked up that 243 at the gun show!

I believe it would have to be a 6mm-06 improved. Due to the minimal case taper on the 243, a standard 30-06 necked down to 6mm will not clean up the chamber either. Kinda like a 280 won't clean up a 7mm-08 chamber unless you do an improved version. Billy

I had inquired about the 284 case before, and many thought it would be iffy, with the rebated case and extractor, I agreed and have not given it another thought for a handi. Now, it does get me excited as a 6.5mm option in a bolt gun except for the availability and cost of dies.

Just to add numbers to your explanation... The shoulder diameter of a 243case is .454" At the same depth from the breech as a .243 shoulder, the diameter of a '-06' case is .448". There would be a 3 thousandths tall second shoulder in the chamber.

That's got to be wild... 6.17 Flash Lazzeroni !! If for no other reason the name. Lazzeroni...Lamborgini...Mazzarati.Bet components ain't cheap on this one. Kurt
After further revue this one is out even on a Handi platform...barrel life is 500 rounds and you could for the most part shoot a .240 with the same preformance. But then you can't do a .240 on a Handi.

Kurt, I've also read about one called the 6mm Predator. I think it is a 6x444 with a 40deg shoulder.

Kurt, The 6 mm Remington Improved mentioned is probably the most practical but I just wanted to add that if you wanted that a rimmed cartridge you could use 6.5 x 57 R or 7 x 57 R brass and blow it out to the improved chamber. I have a handi barrel I made up that is a 270 rimmed using the brass I just mentioned and like it a lot, it's a ejector also. The 6.5 x 57 R has a slightly smaller diameter and a slightly thinner rim than the 7 x 57 R brass. Jedman
