Yes for me. I shot a AR in 338 Federal yesterday, that was a sweet gun.
They may have to get into making brass as well.

Have a Marlin in that caliber. Not too bad, but I would prefer it if they would come out with a 375 Marlin Express. More moulds available. As soon as I get a .375 barrel blank, I am gonna make one for my Marlin.

Tim Tim i read it before posting, then read it again after your response thinking i missed something but I'm not seeing the need, the 308 does what this round does and is everywhere. I sure like the idea of a larger bore for many things, but I'm a bit concerned about cases that can't be formed from something more common. Since the .338 caliber makes more sense than the 35's ( I didn't really say that did I?) balistically it would be nice to have one in a lever, or single shot. Still, many .338 bullets are designed for higher velocities as of now, and bullet casting molds, and such are rare. I've handled the Marlin lever guns in that caliber, and liked them, but so far have not seen any ammo available. I guess I would prefer a simple .35 Rem, or .358 Win, but would probably buy a .338 in either the Marlin, or Federal round. The moose, boar, and bear I see around here are plenty close, and don't need the flatter shooting capability of the .338 really, but I just like the idea of the rounds, and their efficiency.

I vote yes. I have an old Rem 760 that Wayne York rebored and rechambered to 338-06. I put on a Kick-eez pad and the recoil is not that bad, at least up through 220-grain bullets and moderate loads. Great job by Wayne - good accuracy. I would go for any handi in 338 whatever. -Rich

I voted yes, but now am having second thoughts.  I like the idea of a 338 caliber that is not based on the -06 case. I already have one of those in 25, 30, and 35. I like the idea of a rimmed case. Takes some of the potential headspace concerns away but this may not be a real problem with the resulting shoulder dimension on this cartridge. I do not like the fact that this is a Hornady offering for the most part as far as factory ammo goes. I like Hornady, dont get me wrong. I just don't like the fact that they (and federal) have loading gnomes that are able to place special pieces of powder in secret corners of the case capacity to allow them to publish (and most likely achieve) velocities not obtainable to a hand loader. On a new cartridge, much discussion and data used to make decisions is going to be based on these data, and we have no idea how available the factory ammo will be in X years. We will be left to our own devices, loading to modern Lever gun pressures and a known case capacity. This case shape is not special, its merit as far as performance goes, is the outcome of the pressure and case capacity. What is special in the advertisement data we have available, is how Hornady and Federal are able to achieve more with those parameters than you or I. That being said, knowing the playing field beforehand, I think it would be a nice addition to the HR offering. |

I'd vote yes if it was a '358 Marlin Express' so that I could goto MS and use it in their 'primitive' season. And I'd drive up to Remington to pick up a .405 barrel. |

The way i see it the 338marlin express is way better than any other 338 made because it is a marlin load, don't think you are going to get a 338 fed. or 338-06 or any of those others, because marlin already has the 338 marlin express so you may as well be happy that you might get the 338mex (new name)338MEX That my friends is why it is better. tell me when the line starts to form |

Does't it have a rim that will "eliminate" the possibilities certain ejector/extractor problems in a single action break top? It has a lot of power. It would also be another factory bore diameter to create new stuff from.

For the handi they should have just brought back the 33 Win for the short action Marlin they could have made it a improved & shortened the case a bit.
I have a 33 win & form cases from 45/70 it's a 86 win but a good stronger late edition light wight in 33 win the Original .338.
It seems all the medium bore medium poweded rounds all died! A list
350 Rem, 348 win, 35 win, 33,win 358/356win,375 win, 338 federal. Well not all are dead just hard to get brass for except the 358/338 or very expensive. oh I forgot the best one the 35 whalen yep still being made but for how long and not setting any sales records.
If you get a medium bore make sure it has a popular parrent case. I don't see the .338 Marlin lasting too long. It's a great idea but everone is blinded by the big Magnums.
When Remington brought the .350 back I stalked up on Brass for my Mohawk something you don't have to worry about with a Whalen or 358. Because I am lazy I dont feel like making brass from a .338win Cutting reaming ah just to much work lol.
