AMT automag II love them or not ?

im trying to find people who love the AMT automag II as much as i do i just got mine its a very sweet lil pistol fully engraved and other than it being loud as hell its the best gun i ever owned anyway if you love them let me know if you dont let me know why

My old AMT has been as reliable as any rimfire auto and is more accurate than any handgun I've owned except for a scope sighted Contender. The 6 inch barrel with no loss from a cylinder gap gets some serious velocity from the .22 WMR, very close to the FN Five-Seven pistol. It's light and flat for easy holster carry. What's not to love?

right on Joe i took mine out this morning for the first time holy crap what a great gun i put 200 round's down the pipe not one mis-fire and talk about a tack driver i was hitting a 4" target we had set out for the rifle's at 100 yard's can you beleave it 100 yard's 4" target with a automag this hast to be the the best .22 mag handgun ever made

High Standard was supposed to start building these, even had them on their web-site, i called and put my name on the waiting list about 2 years ago but never heard from them.

sent an e-mail to High Standard, they responded & told me that the new Auto-Mag II will go into production at the end of this year, will sell for $695

I have a High Standard built Automag II.
I ordered it in Feb, of 07, received it, July 30 07.
Alot of problems at first. Would not run thru a magazine without at least one jam, or fail to eject.
Sent back 3 times, and still was not satisfied.
Used every type ammo I could find.
Finally after about 5 or 600 rounds, it started to function a lot better. I think it just needed a break in period.
 At first the only decent performance I had was with 40 grain winchesters.
Now it is much more forgiving, and will even function decently with lighter bullets.
Was never impressed with accuracy. It is just ok. great for a hunter or plinker, but certainly not a target pistol!!!
Expensive, Yes I paid $ 695 for mine.
Be prepared to wait, I got excuse after excuse while waiting for my pistol. Even though when I ordered, and paid for it, i was told delivery in about a week.
Overall, after many headaches, and disappointment with the company, I am happy with my Automag. They are a beautiful handgun, and sure draw attention when shooting, people think you have a snubnose 44 mag, it's so loud!

I sure like those Pachmayr grips on the High Standard above and I'm glad that's working okay for you now.

I adore my AMT II's. The 6 inch is really accurate and reliable. It needed a trigger job at first but once that was taken care of everything else was great.
I also have a 4 inch model and the trigger was super sweet right out of the box. I couldn't believe the huge difference between their triggers, it was like night and day.
They sure do have a lot of sentimental value.

Yeah, The Pachmayr's are really sweet. They were for sure one of the selling points. I had looked at a few used Automag's, and was never really impressed with the grips. When I saw the High Standard built piece, with the Pachmayer's, it pretty much made my decision.
I was pretty happy with the trigger from day one.
Never been overly impressed with accuracy.
Although I am satisfied now, if I had it to do over again, I can't say for sure if I would buy another High Standard piece.
Lots of frustration before I was happy!
I also have a Excel MP-22 in 22 WMRF. 2 totally different pistols, I know.
They are a real handful, and lack the classic looks of the Automag, but, it was $ 200 cheaper, lifetime warranty, and will outshoot the Automag hands down.
Now I have installed a Leupold VX-III, and it is a real varmint machine!
If I had bought this pistol first, there probably would have never been an Automag in my posession.
Oh well, WTH, I don't think a guy can have too many 22 magnums!

i paid $175 for mine a 6" barrel NIB..back in 1987. Wonderful pistol. Watch the re-assembly so you don't bent the trigger spring. Never had a FTF.

I bought my 6" Automag II last year, in the box with instruction manual and 2 extra magazines for $425.00.  It's not in perfect shape, but is pretty nice.  About 3 years ago, I sold a Marlin 336 in 375 Winchester that I had just bought for $175.00 so I could go and buy a 3.5" or 4" Automag II, but that gun was gone by the time I got the money together.  My 6" was a good acquistion as far as I'm concerned.  My only complaint with the gun is that the trigger doesn't reset after each shot.  I've learned to flick my fingernail against the front of the trigger, almost like striking a match and that resets the trigger.  I guess I'll have to take it to a gunsmith to fix it.  It is a cool looking gun though, much better looking and much more reliable than the Grendel 22 mag I lusted after about 6 years ago.

I have exccelerator 22 WMR also and it is scarry accurate and very reliable feeding after adjusting the magazine lips and only the low velocity ammo had any FTE problems while the Winchester Dynapoint would not cycle the bolt most of the time and when it did they would stove pipe. The Remington 30gr TNT were 100% reliable and so is the CCI Varminter 2275FPS stuff, but the cases were swollen on the CCI very bad and the bottoms were rounded from being too hot and over powering the recoil spring forcing the bolt to start to open before the bullet leaves the barrel. With open sight at 50 yards I could 9 in the large orange stick on's with the diamond in the middle at 50 yards using the pistol rest and iron sights. First nice day I will put the 2x7x32 on the gun and give it a try as to really see what it will do 50 yard range. One last thing, man is it loud.

After the holidays I will contact Excel Arms about a heavier and a lighter spring set or possibly Wolff Spring.  



As far as AMT goes got tired of trying to find a nice one for a fair price and went wiith the Excel.
