Removing a pachmayr recoil pad
«

Just got a 257Roberts built on an Arisaka type 38 action that was in an old Bishop stock and due to info I received about the rifle I speculate the rifle was built back in 60s or early 70s. I'm redoing the stock. I'm curious how the waffle type Pachmayr recoil pad was attached to the stock. I can pull the white and black plastic spacer and pad away from wood of the butt and this leads me to suspect there are two screws securing the recoil pad, but there are no holes in rear of recoil pad to insert a screwdriver.
How does one remove the pachmayr recoil pad?

If you squeeze the sides of the pad together, you will see the slits for the screws.

Some pads were glued on, but the majority were screwed on - with the screwdriver access through thin razor blade slits or round holes that have rubber plugs installed after the pad was put on.

Put just a tiny bit of vaseline on the point of your screwdriver. It will help alot when you have to push it through the thin razor cuts in the back of the recoil pad, to get to the screw heads. Should be a No. 1 Phillips, but who knows?
