Buying my son a new barrel for his 20 gauge pump. Should I get a smooth bore or fully rifled barrel. What are your experiences. For shots under 75yards do I really need the sabot performance?

If you can keep him under a 75 you should have no problem. I use a 12, and my boy a 20 both smooth bores. Not lost a deer yet. I just can not justify 12-18 dollars a box of 5 shots. If he decides to stay shooting a shotgun for deer maybe later get him the rifled barrel.  If he is using the gun for more than just deer, smooth bore would be a better way to go. For 75 yards and less, I'd go with a smooth bore barrel.

Thanks guys. I'm going with the smoothbore, (barrel is actually $50.00 cheaper,) and a replacement set of fiber optic sights. Gonna give the federal truball a try, plus I have to Remington 5/8 slugs on hand.

Just got back in from shooting the boys Mossy 20 smoothbore. We were shootint Federal Truball rifled, 2 3/4, 3/4 oz, muzzle velocity 1600fps. On the money at 85 yards. 3 shots in a 3" circle. Minute of a deer. Thats using a fiber opit bead on the front, gold dot on the rear.

Good choice. I'll add this, sabots are EXPENSIVE, especially when a kid is learning to use a gun. $50 bucks worth of fosters will teach you a lot about a slug gun $50 worth of sabots will nearly fit in your shirt pocket. It's cheaper to shoot nearly any centerfire rifle made, including premium bullets, than to stoke that rifled barrel.
My daughters 500 Mossy will flat shoot though. Rifled barrel takes those Barnes Expanders out past 125yds. easily. About all the woods are 75 yd shots max though so it rarely matters.

My kids 20ga mossy 500 keeps remmy sluggers inside a 6" shoot n c at 65 yards more than sufficient for the woods here in central N.Y. My new 20ga Tracker II on the other hand shot a 3/4" group at 65 yards with lightfield 2 3/4 hybrids after I had it drilled and tapped and put a Tru Glo 2X red dot on it.

I have an 870 , 20 ga. For a couple years i have used a rem full rifled bbl . Its great except sometimes buck shot would be better . I just got a smooth bore with rifle sights , A rem factory bbl . Then had a gunsmith install a rem choke thread in it . I got a Carlson screw in rifled tube for both lead and sabot slugs . At 50 yards the holes in the target touch . This set up seems good . Also using 4 dollar box slugs vs. 15 dollar box slugs pays for the bbl.

See my post in NEF shotguns. 4pt meets H&R . Deer was taken with a smoothbore shooting Remington sluggers. All the power and accuracy your son will ever need under 75yds,and less than 4 bucks a box at Wally world.

All of my group uses is cheap win. rifled slugs. And we kill alot of deer out to 100 yds. We don't complain accurracy!!!!!
