Being in Fl, I'm not likely to make it, though it sounds like fun.

Are you aware of the Cannon shoot November 22 in Florida? Hernando Sportsman's Club

As much as we would like to have you come up for our shoot, there is one in you neighbor hood. In fact you could go to this shoot next week and then come up here next summer.

I'm planning on going to that shoot, though I currently have nothing to shoot out of my cannon, so I'll just be spectating.

The actual Sportsman's Club range appeared to be narrower than the range we used at this summer's event.  Roughly, how do they compare?  Also, what is the absolute farthest distance that a target may be set-up?

Thanks,

 T&M,

The range that is used is a 200m range. Sometimes, they put targets at the 100m mark too. As, for the width.  I can not say for certain, but, I believe that 15 cannons/positions can fit comfortably maybe a couple more. I would say on average that 8-10 show up. It's quite a bit informal but it has been fun. Unfortanately, I will not be able to make it to this one as, it falls to close to our annual convention and time will not permit.  Sad

The scale ranges from 1" bore to full scale. That has been a Mt. Howitzer (full and reduced bore 2.25") and a Conf. Mt. Rifle a 2.25" too.

I'll try for the next one in March.

Thanks intoodeep, I think it's a little too far for us unless we were going to be within 300 miles or so anyway on a research trip.  Thanks for the information though; it sure sounds like a fun event!

Sorry... I must have been drinking too much... Actually I didn't drink at all, sometimes I'm just an idiot.
I originally posted that I had come up with the name but the even my quote proved me wrong.  I'm never one to not admit my mistakes.  Sorry.  I apologize to all for making a fool of myself.

Thanks for your understanding,
NGH

I think that if this were to be an annual event then BoomLover came up with a name for it:

"The Cut Bank Cannoneer Convention"

Somebody trademark that now...

Looks to me that BoomLover planted the seed and you formalized it, and we will use it and thank you NGH very much. It has a nice ring to it.

You can also fly into Glacier International Airport, north of kalispell. It is about 130mi to Cut Bank, took about 3 hrs to drive and you go thru (around?) Glacier Park as an added bonus!
It was well worth attending, I would have gone even if I had nothing to shoot, as the shoot was on the casual side. This doesn't mean to imply that it was unsafe or sloppy but since there wasn't a formal competition the "cannoneers" were available to talk with and show off their cannons as they weren't totally focused on "winning".
It was the highlight of my summer and I will be there again in '10, God willing and the creek don't rise.

Thx

Was out at the range this afternoon cannonball hunting.  Found a 2.3 pounder at the 100 yard martar range...looked like it wasn't painted, so I thought it was one of George's.  Finally found a small smudge of orange...sorry George. I thought I only lost one of those.  I know where I lost the one, but didn't think I lost one on the mortar range. Took a count when I got home and yep I was short two.

I walked the ground where I did think I lost one but didn't find anything.  Walked over in the area where I lost a 6 pounder.  Looked around a bit and didn't see nothing. Decide to walk to the top of the hill and see what I could see on the back side.  Didn't see anything.  Turned around to head back to the truck and there rigt at my feet was a 6PDR.  The burned side side up. orange side buried.

Didn't find any thing else.

The Butterscotch Bowling Ball was last reported near the orbit of Neptune and accelerating !!!
We will have to insribe something notable , and a map for aliens ,that will lead them deadnoots away from "here" . I wasnt sure why they (Sagan and the JPL) wanted to tell god and everyone where the hell we are HuhHuh

BUT someday ...if...you really want a nice walk how about angling over to the 500 target when you get there keep going in a fanning sweep . Do you have a nice metal detector .... Grin yep ,,  keep on going ...

I have spent a good two hours with Mike and Tracy looking for bolts . There are over 150 of them 'out there' and in one direction .......I found two and we were 2200 yards out IIRC M,T charm on in on this !

Just two ! and one of them was only 800 yds out ....?

BTW They are treasures now that sit in my living room . very nice patina !

I think the one beer can zinc shot I lost is at least 600 yards from the firing line.

Not to worry, NGH, I don't mind sharing the fame and glory! It does have a nice ring to it, doesn't it! Actually, we are looking to start a "club" here in Curry Co., the "Curry County Cannon Club", "CCCC" for short...Logo would be a 4 leaf clover with "C" in each leaf, placed over crossed cannons...I'll lay first claim to that as a Club Logo!   Double D, I'll send those "gongs" to you, soon as I PM you again! This would be in 2010?  August, second weekend?  In addition to the one I have talked about in So. California?  Regarding which, by the way, I have not heard from either of the two persons related to N-SSA that I have emailed about insurance.

That was a long trip.  But I would consider it again.

George, just slapped me up side the head and say "hey pay attention" answer my question...sorry George! ouch! Smiley

August 7-8th 2010.

If you want to put on a shoot down your way please do. There are plenty of folks hanging out here who are closer to you in CA than me in MT.  Same for you guys east of here, put on you own shoots.  Set you own venues, get together and meet each other. Share ideas.

You won't regret it!

A lot more planning going to take place for this shoot.  The was a lot of I would like to do that didn't get done last year that may get get done this year and some that might not.

Watching Cannonmn's video refreshed my memory.  I am going to try and build some sort of fortified position.  If I remember right the "forts" we shot back in  the 80's in Oredon were made of pallets.  I'll build a pallet fort with some fake accnons and flag pole.

South Paw has some barrels and buckets he said we can shoot them.

I will put up the mortar posts again.  As far as standing targets.  I think I will just have the targets stand available and let you guys put up what you want.  I'll open the range plenty early for set up.

Maybe some empty 55 gallon drums which will make noise when hit but not disintegrate with the first hit.

Here's and idea.

How about a Cannon yard sale at the shoot.  If you have a cannon to sell, wood or steel for building, projectiles anything cannon related you want to get rid off or just move out of your way.  We could set it up behind the firing line.

A yard sale would probably require someone to "stand guard" so nothing grew feet.  It might work better for those wishing to dispose of things to just put FOR SALE signs on those items and be responsible for their own security.

George!!!   This Montana!!!! People don't lock their doors here!!  They leave their car keys in the ignition-and engine running in the winter.

Okay you have a good point, but we'll figure something out.  Maybe at the business meeting.

There was a table with a few Brooks guns in Aug. a lady was tending it .

I saw some kids begining to drool .....by next year the word may have got out a bit to the locals .

Doug, as those kids grow you'll be running a cannon school .

Your own command ! Aarrggggha !

There was a gentleman selling powder , and the owner of a Fuse Company who gave some gift certificates as prizes . I 'm sure he could bring some wares .

George,

Gotta guard...moved my Mother in law from Seattle to Cut bank last week.

We will have a Cannon yard sale some where.

I am also going to start now building a fort for us to shoot up.

If you are coming and can bring some sort of Reactive target, please do.
