I've been looking at load data for different powders.  So far I have been sticking to IMR 4198 with 405 grain remington jacketed.  I have some 405 grain oregon trail on the way.  I have some IMR 4064, 3031, and 4895 on hand and have seen data for those.  Anyone seen any data for BL-C (2)?  That may not work, but I was just curious.  I load alot of 308 but only recently started working up loads for the 45 70.

Depends if you want mild or wild loads.  I used to just duplicate BP loads with Accurate Arms 5744 powder for my loads.

4198 is hard to beat for hunting loads. For light loads, Trail Boss is king.

I've had pretty good luck with IMR4198.  But I tend to shoot low level 2 to low level 3 loads.

My barrel really likes 2400 for trapdoor  Jacketed bullets and Trail Boss for OT cast bullets.  Re#7 and Varget are good for Marlin level loads. Actually my 45/70 will shoot just about anything I feed it fairly well.  It is by far my favorite Handi barrel.  It and I are going deer hunting Saturday.  Be afraid deer, be very afraid! Cheesy

Check the Hodgdon site for the BL-C2 info, it's listed there.  DP

For cast low velocity you can use Red or Blue Dot as well, even Universal will work.

40 grains of Varget is a good 405 grain .45-70 load

I too have had good success with IMR 3031 in my Handi.  58 grains under a 300 gr Hornady JHP will produce a nearly ragged hole at 100 yds and is lethal on Wisconsin whitetail deer.

I load with Varget and RL-7.
My cousin swears by 3031 in his 45-70.

It may be a hot load compared to yours, but 59.5gr 3031 under a 300gr Sierra @2021fps is still a trapdoor load according to Hodgdon, levergun loads go to 64gr at 2196fps, still at less than 30kcup, both loads are compressed at 2.525" COL.

If you are only trying to slay paper targets, your laser cast bullets with Unique are great to shoot, I use 13 grains under just about any 300-400 grain bullet and they kill the paper every time!

enjoy the 45-70, much more rewarding and fun to reload for than the 308!

Yeah, they hurt like hell when sighting in the rifle, but the deer was the only one to notice when I pulled the trigger the last time.  The fireball was pretty impressive though in the dim hours of sunset.

I can go mild to wild with Varget.  As Swampman stated above, a nice comfortable load is 40gr. under a 405.  I won't publish my "hot" load but it will reset a shoulder nicely.  I let my brother's shoot that.

I load with AA2015.  It works well in mild to hot loads.

I have good luck with 4064 under the 300gr Sierra HP's around 1900fps. They seem to shoot well out to 200 yds, 300 requires a little holdover, pretty mild recoil.
I just loaded some H4198 under the 300s this morning. They should go about 2300 fps & have a little more kick.

Varget for 400 gr range loads is good. H322 for 500-550 gr loads.

I’ve used IMR3031 for 405gr jacketed bullets and Accurate 5744 with 400gr cast bullets for years, using loads recommended by Mike Venturino.  If I ever start casting my own 45/70 bullets I’d start experimenting with Unique and 2400, using data from a 50s era Lyman Cast Bullet Reloading Manual as a guide.

Cheers,

I had a lot of H4831 to get rid of  - found a load of 53gr under a 405 in the laser cast manual. Works great 1350fps. Trapdoor level load.  Works with a 405 Remington bullet too. Accuracy was almost as good as my best loads. I've seen loads for 45-70 for just about every powder made.

My Handi 45-70 loves Re-7, H4198, but I have burned more H-322 in it than the others over the years. Very accruate in stout loads.
