Today is the first time I ever cast any bullets. I used wheel weights and cast them with a Lee 440 grain mold, lubed with Lyman Super Moly, insatalled a Hornady gas check and ran them through a .501" sizing die. I used Starline cases, H-4198 powder and WLR primers, seated the bullets to an overall length of 2.1" with no crimp. I fired 5 three shot groups at 100 yards and the average group size for all 5 groups combined was under 2.25". The chronograph results gave an average velocity of 1565 FPS.
I had to take my old 24" barreled Marlin 336A in 30-30 Ackley Improved out yesterday (Opening Day) because of some gifts (posted in the Marlin forum), wound up getting an 8 pointer with it.
Last year on this day 11-15 I got the buck in my avatar with my 500 and wound up getting two more deer with it, it was 3 for 3. Well now it's time to get it back in the woods with some homemade bullets. I've never taken a deer with a cast bullet, much less one that I made myself. Hope to post a report on how they perform, penetration should be a non-issue Grin!
I'll only get to hunt Wednesday and Thursday this week because of work so hopefully a report will follow.

Anyone have any experience with cast bullets on game with the 500 Handi?

Thanks!
GOOD SHOOTING!

Sounds like your gearing up Slufoot, and should be able to get some more cheaper practice out there too Cool
I look forward to hearing more about your progress with cast in the 500.

Yeah, I'm excited about trying out the cast bullets on deer. I only had 31 cases ready for loading and the load I used shot plenty good for deer and I know has more than enough  punch. When season is over I'll fire up the melting pot again and start playing with some different loads.

I'm excited to hear of you taking a deer with your homemade bullets. It will encourage the rest of us who have been holding out. Good luck.
