A lady shot herself in the leg while she was scooping snow the other day. A SA revolver,Uberti, fell out of her holster and discharged. I am proud of the way our local media covered the story. The article said that SA's without modern safetys are prone to this accident. They said that handguns should be securely strapped into their holsters. They forgot to mention that SA's without a transfer bar safety should be carried with an empty chamber under the hammer, but hey we can't all be perfect. They reported that the lady had loaded the gun with five 357 hollowpoints and one 38 lead RN. The gun fired the 38, and they explained what a difference in outcome that made.  What is even more amazing instead of the usual anti gun tirade, they explained that the lady lived in a rough neighborhood and thus packed the 6 shooter while she cleaned her walk.

I felt the article was so good that I wrote a letter to the editor with some KUDOS. I also told a story that an old Indian had told me when I lived in Alaska. He had shot himself in the stomach with a SA 357. Same story, a revolver without a transfer bar fell out of his holster. Only this old boy didn't shoot himself in the leg with a 38 special in town with a cell phone handy. He was by himself in a boat miles from civilization. He managed to make it to help and lived to tell his story.

My single actions without the modern safety are not prone to this.  Could drop them a million times and they would never go off.  Hammer always down on an empty.  I'm not sure firearms are prone to anything much, but it sure sounds like some people are.

The reason for the transfer bar on Rugers is because they didn't have enough room on the barrel for the add safety precautions on carrying only 5 rounds.

Well........actually.....the transfer bar came a few years before the warning, but your point is taken.

I feel sorry for the old lady and the old Indian, but they just proved the old saying that nothing is FOOLproof!

Got to admit that's a better report than probably 95% of newspapers would write up.

Sorry guys. I can see I posted this in the wrong place. I thought it should have been in the round the ol pot belly catagory, but someone once complained that it was overused.

My intent was not to criticize  SA guns, they are my favorite handgun, the get it right phrase was to criticize the press which never gets a gun related story right. In this case the reporter wasn't biased and went to a knowledgable cop and actually put out a pretty good story.
