Looks doable to me. Wink Too bad the 7mm-08 is only available in a 22" barrel.

Why would you want to do this? Is there any advantage to the 284 over the 280?

My way of thinking conserning choice of calibers is its not always a matter of better performance. Rather having something different than everybody else.

To answer your question, No the 284 dosen't really do anything the 280 couldn't do.

But following this line of thinking. We should all only own a 30-06 and it can do it all..... Roll Eyes Grin Wink

How would that work out with the rebated rim of the 284, as to getting the case out of the chamber.

It has the same rim size as the 7-08, shouldn't be a problem with an ejector, may be even better with an extractor.

The rebated rim on the 284 would give trouble with the ejextor or extrator. There is 30 thou difference from the rim to body. Yes the rim is the same as the 7-08 but the body is 30thou bigger. The extractor would be 15 thou below the body to extract and the case would be stuck against extractor claw.

Unlike a bolt extractor which rides out of the way with the case, in a Handy the extaractor is stationary and the case has to slide over the claw. I may work, but I doubt it.

280 vs the 284, who cares   Grin Grin

the most powerfull cartridge is not the only one we need.  I think the 284 is a sharp looking cartridge and not very prevalent.  I diont have a 7mm and not too many have grabbed my interest so far.  I was at an auction and there were a couple of Win 88s and a couple of Win 100s, and the 284 version fetched the highest price by far.

My initial concerns are the rebated rim and the 1/2 inch diameter case being larger than the other full pressure bottleneck chamberings in the handi.   But, Im starting to think the loading on the handi that can cause problems is the pressure on the bottle neck, not the case diameter.  The aftward pressure goes directly into the flat receiver.  The bottleneck gets forward load from the pressure and loads the locking lug of the barrel.   Huh

An extractor would definately work,  but I think the later ejector underlugs with the lifter button would, my .280 ejector has plenty of range of movement to allow the fat .284 case past.

Fred, do either of your ejectors have the lifter button, the little piece above the latch spring in the pic?

Tim.
Yes both my ejector rifled have the lifter button. I don't think the ejector  will work very well without them. I have changed the spring on one rifle for a bit more compression, don't remember which one.

My .35rem barrel is an older barrel, it doesn't have the lifter button and it has very little up and down range, I had a heck of a time making the ejector for it cuz the barrel was a 357mag in it's previous life, converting the ejector to rimless was a pain. Angry
