Midsouth Shooters Supply Varmint Nightmare Bullet Review

Graybeard:
First follow up on review:
I did some more shooting for this review today (11-03-09)

Using the Rem 700 SPS Varmint .223 I shot a group with the MSS 55 grain bullet over 25.5 grains of AA2460. I had a flyer that opened group to 0.9” but the other four went into a tight cluster measuring only 0.276”. Flyers were a common thread in my shooting today for some reason. I think that reason was the shooter.

It was the only group fired today with this rifle that I think was valid. It obviously has become fouled and accuracy has degraded badly from last shooting session. I’m going to clean the barrel and shoot these loads again as I just don’t think today’s results other than this one were indicative of what the loads are capable of. I’ve lost count of the rounds fired since last cleaning on this rifle and it’s just not fair to report specifics until I clean it and see if it repeats the good or the less good results of today.

Below is the one group I’m reporting on today.

mjbgalt:
that's what my groups with Varget and H4350 look like too. great bullets!

mjbgalt:
shot the first 5 shot 1/2 inch group in my life with these bullets. i am ordering more!

LaOtto222:
I have shot both the 34 grain .224 and 50 grain .224 bullets. In a Handi that is a re-barreled (Douglas stub) 22K Hornet I got these groups using the 34 grain Mid South bullet. The Handi platform is not the best for accuracy - These bullets would do even better with a good bolt gun. Of course this is plenty accurate enough for it's range and it's intended use. Loads are listed on the target. I have shot them some in a Savage Model 40, but haven't done so enough to see if they are going to work out... I need to do more load development - but they look promising. BTW I got 500 to start with and then ordered 1000 more - can't beat the price and they shoot good too.

I have used the 50 grain nightmares in a Remington 700 that I re-barreled myself to 221 Fireball. I do not have any pictures of groups with it, but it will make 1 hole groups at 100 yards real consistently. They make the above groups look bad. Once in a while I get a flier that opens the group up to .5 -.6, but I blame that on me, not the bullet. I use RL7 and Remington 7 1/2 primers. I have shot a few

I have also used this bullet in a 23" T/C 221FB barrel. I consistently get groups under .75" with it and once in a while I will get a .5" group with it. I use a lighter load of RL7 for this gun. I have shot a few woodchucks with this gun/bullet (it is so easy to carry). I find that at 221 velocities (2900 fps muzzle); that I get a pass through. I have never lost a 'chuck due to this. The entry hole is a normal entry hole the exit is about the size of a nickle when shot 75- 100 yards. Some times I get an exit hole and some times not; if shot under 50 yards.

I have not done any testing with the 50 grain bullets in my other guns - yet (a couple of 223s, and a 22 BR). I will be getting around to it this spring. I bought 1000 of these to start with (because of price) and liked them so well I got another 500 so my supply is back up over 1K.

hornady:
I think they are the same bullet, but I have bought the Hornady Bulk & Breakdown 55gr, w/cann (250) bullets for $20.11 from Mid-South and I shoot them in My Savage model 11 in  223, and my Savage Stevens 200 in 22-250, and was very pleased with the results I got with a mid-range Hornady load of Varget.
