Is there $200 worth of difference between the Leupold VX-2 and the VX-3
Just got to hear from people that have shot with them both to see.

No there isn't.  The New VX-2 is amazing.....the VX-II less so....

What is this selling point of the VX-3 then? I am missing something.

The VX-2 is lighter and just as bright.  The VX- 3 has the Xtended Twilight Lens System and The DiamondCoat 2 for what that is worth.

Better glass and a bit more engineering. Some of the newer VX-3 scopes have a little less eye relief which is a mistake IMHO. Are they worth more? Only each individual can decide that.

If you were asking about the old varix II compared to the old vari X III id say yes no doubt. The newer vx2 is a much improved scope. Is the vx3 better. No doubt but the IIs are plenty good enough for any deer hunting situation and much cheaper. The vx2s i have are everybit as good opticaly as a nikon monarch or ziess conquest.

And quite a bit lighter in weight.  That's something I look for.

These are some of the things I wanted to know. I plan on replacing my Nikon Monarch SF with a leupold just trying to make up my mind which.

If you are hunting deer the vx2 is more than adequate. It is a very good scope and I don't think it's worth spending the $100 plus for the vx3. I myself like the Monarch but that's just a personal choice.

When I get home from in December the Monarch will be for sale. I think the VX-3 3.5-10x40 is what I am looking at replacing it with.

Not all users have the same needs in a scope.   For the majority of shooters/hunters the lessor grades are plenty good to go and will serve them well.    For those who do serious long to extreme range shooting the extra cost is well worth paying.

I have 2 monarchs.
The original is a 3-9x40 that is awesome and will stay on my gun for ever.
The second is a 4-16x42 SF and I am just not happy with the clarity of it. I even sent it back to Nikon once and they went through it. It may just be be me but it is coming off when I get home and going up for sale. Who ever buys it will be happy with it I am sure but I don't like it.
You can't even compare the 2 I have t each other.

I would suggest the Leupold VX-2 in 3-9x40mm or 4-12x40mm with standard duplex reticle.

I have a buddy that purchased the Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 SF with BDC reticle for his Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight in 270 Weatherby Magnum. Sadly he bought it at a retail store paying full retail price and had them mount it and sight it in for an additional fee with his ammo, but I feel he should have went with the Leupold VX-2 mentioned above which can be purchased for lots less or cheaper if purchased new off auction sites.

I have a lot of Leupold scopes and zero Nikon, so cannot recommend anything other than Leupold for their quality, customer service and warranty if ever needed.

I do have the older Leupold VX-III in 3.5-10x40mm on my Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight in 338-06 A-Square and the older Leupold VX-II in 3-9x40mm on my Weatherby Mark V Sporter in 7mm-08 Remington and both are as expected stellar in clarity and performance.

Ive got 3 of the old monarchs, 2 team primos which are the old monarchs and and one of the newer 2.5x10 monarchs and to my eyes there isnt a pinch of differnce between them. there all good scopes. I do have more leupolds then any other though. If i had the money vx3s would be on all my guns but that isnt going to happen.

My apologies. On SWFA the VX-2 3-9x40 plain jane is 299.95 and the VX-3 3.5-10x40 plain jane is 479.95. $180 difference but with the rebate being offered now of $80 on the VX-3  it is only $100 difference.

                If I could move up to a VX-3 3.5-10 from a VX-2 3-9 for a $100.00 I believe I would do it as well.

My favorite is the VX-3 2.5-8X36 for $399.00 in extra lows.

Just curious- Would you spend the extra $100.00 for the VX-3 2.5-8x36 over the VX-2 2-7x33 ?

FWIW, I think the VX-3 has better optical coating.  It "probably" transmits light better.  I generally look for a used 3.5x10 VX3 for my all around rifles (my 06, 300win and 35Whelen) and buy them when I can find them.  I also find the VX2 3x9 to be a fine scope.  For rifles that I consider long range shooters like 270, etc, I GENERALLY use VX2 4x12AO (REM700 in 223, 270win) but I also find that a VX1 works really well (243).  I currenty have Vari-X 2 2x7s on a 375HH, 7x57 and an Car15.
