I know that Greybeard is not a dedicated concealed carry site, nor is it even a dedicated pistol site, but a lot of the real dedicated sites are kind of militant, let's all go blow up the government, quit paying our taxes, and why can't i have a machine gun kind of places. I feel really at home at Greybeard. just a good bunch of folks, who mostly seem to love the Lord, work hard, pay their taxes, support our government, evben when the gubmenty does really stupid stuff, and like to hunt and fish and shoot. My kind of folks. But i do want to warn all of you about some things that can get you hurt or killed.
As a concealed carry instructor, I see a kind of " It won't happen to me "attitude, even amoung the people who take the trouble to come to one of my classes to get the required certificate to get a ccw permit.
There are three kinds of handguns that are no good. First, the one you don't have with you. If it aint on you, it ain't going to do you any good. Nuf said. I will add that a good holster will hide anything.
Second is the kind you don't know how to use. I don't care how good you are at bull's eye or sillouette, it only matter how good you are with your carry gun when the chips are down. Not to say bullseye or other "games " are irrelivent. they certainly are not! I disagree very strongly with trainers who start people on the run and gun thing. You should start on Bullseye, sillouette, or some other structured "gun game", and then and only then move to the run and gun stuff. I do, however feel very strongly that you should use the same type of gun, at least, for all the types of shooting that you do. I also feel that you should carry in the same place, generally, and with the same holster or type of holster for everything.
Lastly, There is the gun that you won't use. No one can decide another's moral framework for them. You are going to have to come up with your own set of moral guidelines about the use of deadly force. I personally am a fundemental Bible believing Christian, and the Bible is my roadmap. I try to stay within the law of the land, but if there is a conflict, I will always obey God's law, and admit to breaking man's law and face the consequinces. The two are seldom in conflict, believe it or not.
I have almost exclusively switched to the 1911 platform. Kicking and screaming. There are several reasons. First, you can get a very accurate 1911 for not a whole lot of money now days. You can get a dead nuts reliable 1911 for very little money these days. You can get conversion kits for 22 for $300 or so, and they are probably more accurate than most of us can shoot. You can get parts for accuracy, trigger reach, sights , barrels that are extra long for hunting, etc. etc. etc. Even Smith and wesson doesn't have all the parts they SHOULD for their revolvers, but that is another story... You can get .38 super, 9mm 9x23, .40, 45acp, 45 super, several specialty calibers that fill any need up to deer and hog hunting. 10 mm is probably one of the best, least used all around cartridges in history. It is great in the 1911 platform.
There are a good many holster makers who make holsters for the 1911, and aome of them actually know what they are doing. The 1911 is very very concealable, wqith a good quality pancake holster.
The 1911 "points " fairly well for most people.
My first and truest love will always be a "k " frame Smith revolver, closely followed bythe "n". But I just can't do everything with one gun the way i can with a 1911.
