I am going to throw in my .02 but it really just echoes the thoughts of a few others. I built one (Ha! Bought a Savage 110 and swapped a barrel) and thought it was going to be an awesome hybrid of using a regular length case but shooting a bigger bullet, better BC, etc. etc.
I too am a huge fan of Elmer and his .333 OKH.
My findings: It wasn't a whole lot better than the 30-06, except you could push the 250 grain bullets, but not as fast as a magnum. This limited the killing ability of the cartridge to about 250 yards before all steam left it.
If I wanted a magnum I would get one. And I seriously doubt that it is too weak to take game past 250 yards. Thats ridiculous. I know for a fact that guys have taken african plains game past 400 yards with a 35 Whelen before modern powders and bullets.
