i love the 500 SW mag, my favorite load is the 440 gr WFN GC bullet from Matts bullets and 20 grs Blue Dot. it is going 1235 fps and is very accurate. Matts bullets has another bullet i like, it is a 460 gr RNGC and with 30 grs AA5744 goes 1354 fps and is very accurate also. I have used 65 grs black powder with a 500 gr bullet that i designed that goes over 1100 fps. not too shabby for a 50 cal blackpowder centerfire. This cartridge really smacks game. Enjoy.....JimP.

Same here, that 440 LEE mold and 5744 was a very nice load in mine too. (When I had it. ) Even killed a deer with it!

I would have jumped on that deal too, Joe, NICE score!
I would go straight for the 85-100% TB loads for cast bullets and forgo the Unique, which I would save for smaller capacity cases, but then ya all know Im a TB convert from some time back .
Years ago I met a chap that had an original 50-70 that he loaded BP rounds for and claimed if you wanted to kill with the hole that was the piece. I suspect much of the old buff herd fell to it rather than the 45-70, which came out at the end of the real buff herd era. Just load that 500 to 50-70 ballistics, good enough for a buff, good enough for me.

I have it sitting next to me right now. About to go run some unique rounds through it. Loaded them last night with 15 grains. Trail boss is next.

Ha dang. Just noticed this on the stock.

The 15 grains of Unique shot good but this thing shoots about 16-18" high at 50 yards! Gonna dig around and see if i have a taller front sight. Not sure i have enough adjustment left on the rear. If not, i'll move the peep to the middle of the barrel.
