I haven't been able to get any Hornady "magnum" bullets to expand in the 45 Colt carbine. The standard 300 grain XTP expand nicely from 1000-1700fps.

Thanks, Dinny

I reload and shoot 348 Win, 358 Win, 6.5 Grendel, 30-06 Springfield, 300 BLK, 44 Mag, 357 Maximum, 9mm, 45 ACP, 45 Colt, 225 Win and 35 Rem

That was my point, penetration shouldn't be an issue...

Granted, I have not shot any XTP Magnum bullets at pigs. But then again, I don't need to. The hard cast SWC with it's sharp edges cuts a nice hole through the gristle plate and has enough weight that it usually gives complete pass through. The hole stays open as well. Lots of air in and blood out. Pigs expire quickly. Why mess with something that works?

The XTP with it's rounded profile, especially if it doesn't expand, will likely punch a hole that will close up.

I like the Hornady XTP. Use them in 9mm, 38, 357, 44, and the 45. It's a good defensive bullet and it does work well on deer if you hit them where they live.

Test that 250gr XTP in water jugs or wet packed newspaper before hunting with them from a rifle. They are rated for a slower 'standard' 45 Colt pistol velocity range.

Thanks, Dinny

Thanks for that. Any ideas of what velocity I can expect? I have scoured the internet and can only find pistol velocities.

Hornady rates the 250gr XTP for 800-1600fps. From a 20" Handi barrel those velocities can be exceeded.

Thanks, Dinny

If you look at ballisticsbytheinch.com, they haven't compared that particular caliber/bullet combination, but you can do some extrapolation from other results.

240grain 44mag (federal hydrashok) is about 1380 fps in a 6" barrel, in a 18" barrel, it does 1643. That is about 260fps or so gain in 12". The trend on most of these pistol calibers is you get appreciable gains in velocity up to about 12", after that, the gains are minimal, sometimes, you even lose velocity.

Supposed to be great shooters.? SLUG YOUR BARREL... wondering why no one's 'suggested' that already.

By the time I found out mine had a 'typical' overbore @ .454 I'd wasted alot of time and money, lost friends and got a bad taste in my mouth about Handi rifles in general. even though someone finally gave me some BIG lead bullets and I found a load that actually hit the target, wow.. I was tired, bitter and disgusted. it's a dust collector probably for life. what a waste of my time and money...

Slug your barrel, or not... JMHO.

Think as if you LIFE depends on it... IT does..! Be Well...

Somewhere on here, maybe in the FAQ's, they corrected that issue on the 2007 production barrels. Mine is a 2007 so I should be ok. I'll find out soon I reckon. Ordering .452" XTP's.....
