Could a 22 lr or mag barrel work or is the twist wrong?

I believe the twist would be OK for 221 Fireball although it may be a little slow for heavier bullets. However, I am not sure if the heat treatment of the steel will stand up to the extra wear of a centerfire round.

A word about twist rate; there are two different twist rates for 22 Hornet Handi-Rifle barrels depending on when it was manufactured.

Hornet twist for the Handi is 1:12" or 1:9" depending on when it was made, earlier H&R Inc barrels are 1:16". Rimfire barrels are 1:16" and 1137 mild steel compared to 4140 for centerfire barrels, so throat erosion could be an issue. See the FAQs for details on twist.
