Default 30-30 Ackley Improved

I've been working on developing a load for hunting deer and antelope. Reamed my sb2 30-30 last year with Tim's rental reamer. Only had time to fire form brass and do a rough site in last year. This summer I started with a load from Speer for the regular 30-30 using flat point 150 gr bullets. I substituted 150 gr. Gold Dot boat tail spire point bullets with BC of 0.503. Starting at the book maximum load of 41 gr. of Alliant MR 2000 I loaded 5 rounds each at 41.0, 41.5, 42.0 and 42.5 for my first try with the fire formed brass. They all shot about the same, 1.5 to 2" at 100 yards. No sign of over pressure. So this trip I loaded 4 rounds each at 42.0, 42.5, 43.0, 43.5 and 44 grains MR 2000. They all shot about the same until the last group at 44 gr. all holes touched and no extreme pressure signs. I think this is the ticket. Now have to load some more and see if I get the same results. Photos of target below. Velocity from Speer shows 41 gr. is giving 2,530 fps. I'm estimating 44 gr. is traveling about 2,650 fps.

I'd say that's a winner right there.

Interests wide and widely varying.
Happily married 18 years. Retired on SS with lots of time to spend.
Started with .223 Ultra Bull barrel. Added .357 Talo barrel. Added an action and stock set bought here, 7.62x39 barrel. Then bought complete guns .444 Marlin and .300 Blackout. Leaving me at 4 complete rifles plus a barrel. Plus a 9mm stub job bought here, and I have been finding and buying H&R shotguns at our local pawn shop where they seem to go cheap.

I worked up to 41.0 grains of Leverevolution under the Speer 150 gr. flat nose getting excellent accuracy and 2590 fps. My 30-30 AI is a contender carbine with a 21 inch barrel. Seems like that is a pretty reasonable speed to work with, zero signs of pressure and a case that only needs trimming once!

MR2000, Leverevolution and CFE223 all look like good choices according to Speer:
