Default cheap 300 blackout hunting bullets?

well do some recent circumstances beyond my control I had to give my 300 blackout handi to a young lady that has been hunting with it and me for the last several years. She has ruined the rifle for me as she has killed her first 2 deer and 2 black bears with it. I could no longer keep the gun without feeling guilty. That said I replaced it with a ruger ranch that takes AR mags. Its a great little gun and shoots my 125 grn ballistic tip load very well. But now that I can load up 30 round mags to carry around the place and with my tendency to shoot a lot I was wondering what you all recommend for an alternative bullet to use for general purpose hunting. I will use the ballistic tips when I put the rifle to "real hunting" situations but what have you all had luck with in the 125 grn class that still works on deer, coyote etc that wont break the bank?

A good sale on pulls will probably be your best bet. I've tried a few, new, with the Hornady 150 Grain Spire Point being among the cheapest at about 24˘ A piece. Of course casting your own is an option, but expensive unless you already have most of the equipment.

American Reloading sells bulk bullets at reasonable prices. Tell us more about the black bear kills. I've killed a number of hogs and one deer with mine but have never considered using it for bear, unless it was to wound my hunting buddy so I could run to safety.

Anyone wanna go bear hunting with me?!

Thanks, Dinny

I reload and shoot 348 Win, 358 Win, 6.5 Grendel, 30-06 Springfield, 300 BLK, 44 Mag, 357 Maximum, 9mm, 45 ACP, 45 Colt, 225 Win and 35 Rem

I was not with her when the bear were shot, but they hunted them with dogs and head shoot to avoid the dogs getting hurt if the bear comes out of the tree alive. It's not my kind of hunting but I certainly don't judge those who enjoy it. The deer shot with it seemed to exhibit excellent bullet performance. Good expansion, excellent penetration and quick kills. Before I lost the rifle to her I managed to shoot a big tom turkey and a beaver. Based On what I have seen with my 125 grain ballistic tip handloads I would say it would be fine for bear at reasonable ranges, but probably not my first choice unless hunting with dogs.

I plan to do some bear hunting with dogs in December. I may carry my new to me 22 Hornet 20" Superlight and aim for the base of the ear.

Thanks, Dinny

That seems to be where most prefer to aim. I belong to a hunt club in Eagle rock VA that is made up mostly of bear hunters, most of the time they don't even shoot. These guys just love to hear the dogs run, but when they do the base of the ear is what they go for. In Va you can only hunt big game with 24 cal and up, but I don't see why the hornet wouldn't work if legal.

Looks like it's NE of there off of 220. I'm hunting Head Waters in Highland County. I'll likely carry my Rem Model 7 in 35 Rem. It's light and accurate.

Thanks, Dinny
