Ejector question

I have a New England handi rifle sb2 .223. It won't eject shells and after researching found out it's a common problem. After taking in down to inspect the ejector to examine noticed by the schematic it has a extractor spring missing. Is it suppose to have this? It has a coil spring behind the ejector. Could you give me some advice on this rifle?

Rifle barrels made prior to about 2007 had automatic ejectors with a coil spring, later barrels had manual extractors with no coil spring, see the FAQs sticky for more info on parts specific to your barrel and how to fix the fail to eject, usually just polishing the chamber and increasing coil spring tension helps.

Sounds like you have an ejector and coil spring.

The extractor and leaf spring is a different, newer design.

The ejectors are sometimes prone to having stuck cases. The function can be improved by keeping the chamber clean. Some try polishing the chamber with steel wool or a mild abrasive paste such as Flitz or chrome polish. Increasing the spring force by adding a BB under the spring is another improvement as is polishing the ejector itself. Adding too much spring force will make the action difficult to close. It's a balance between how much force is needed to close the action and how much ejection force is needed to operate reliably.

Tip: when you have the ejector removed try inserting and removing an unfired cartridge using just finger pressure. If you feel any resistance then it's your chamber that needs to be worked on.
