Default Miami/dade FBI shooting in the 1980s

I went back and read the reports of this stop and shootout. Itís been used as the classical study of police training and armorment for years. But what did we really learn from it?

Wear your body armor. Donít just have it in the back seat.
Long guns should be as accessible as handguns. Donít leave your shotgun or carbine in the trunk.
Tactics are important. Use barriers and donít expose yourself to gunfire. Stay under cover as much as possible.

How do these lessons apply to civilian shoots. Civilians canít just go running around usually with a AR and body armor unnoticed.

i remember when this happened.
the agents made what should have been good
solid hits, but what they were using didn't have
enough soup to shut the bank robbers down.

The robbers were using H&K 91s.

No they weren't. They had a Mini14, a 12 gauge shotgun, and two 357 magnum handguns.

Then that wasn't the one I saw a documentary about. Cameras clearly showed that was a 91. They walked
up and down the street in full body armor. Maybe that was Cali I can't remember.

The Miami shoot out was the one that had the FBI look into what round they should use in their handguns. For awhile it was decided that the 10MM on a semi auto was the one. I think that has been dropped in favor of .45ACP again or 9MM (don't know for sure). I do remember that one of the best FBI shooters wore glasses and broke them early in the fight, resulting in decreased capability.

Some personal trivia. I was about a hundred yards from that gunfight when it occurred. Not in any direct capacity, but it was memorable. It was in the news a lot. The FBI agents held up their body armor like sheets of paper in front of themselves to stop the bullets, or so it was reported. About the same time, and unrelated, a rotting corpse was found in the trunk of a car that had been parked in the parking lot of the building I worked in. It was actually a very nice neighborhood, most of the time.
