Default H&R 939 Ultra Sidekick 9shot 22cal

New to the forum and have a question about a gun show purchase over the weekend. Picked up this H&R 939 Ultra Sidekick ,in the box almost looks unfired. It has hammer cylinder release and safety lock in the bottom of the grip(no key). The serial # starts with VU and I believe it is a 1958 or 1959 model. Can anyone explain the odd ser # and can anyone tell me if keys are available ?

"The Book" says the VU code was interpreted to mean it was made in 1958, but didn't leave the factory until 1959 after being fitted with the key lock before being shipped. See the sticky on "The Book.

I ran across one of those (later model - 1976 vintage, from the serial number) at as pawn shop the other day - I wasn't prepared to pay the $349 he was asking so passed it up and didn't examine it very closely - neat guns - did not notice if it had a lock in the butt - is that something they all had after a certain year or only on some years?

Dan - Handi's - 157 22 Hornet Mannlicher Stock, 157 30-30 Mannlicher stock, 45LC Buffalo Classic Carbine with 22K-Hornet and .357 Max Talo barrels, 45-70 Buffalo Classic, 204 Ruger Ultra with Fluted Barrel, 223, 12 Gauge Topper Deluxe Classic, 20 gauge TDC, 20 Gauge Topper Junior Classic, Pardner .410 Youth, 17HMR Sportster, .357 Mag Handi...

Default 939

Shot the Sidekick yesterday and Man was I impressed .Did all off hand shooting but loved the way it shot. I do have a question, is it safe to carry the Sidekick with all 9 rounds or carry on a empty chamber?

I would recommend leaving an empty chamber since your first variation doesn't have a transfer bar to prevent a discharge if the hammer is impacted like if the gun was dropped. The transfer bar wasn't deployed until the 2nd model in 1974 according to the book.

There's a diagram in the book showing a lifter, lifter pin and sear near the trigger, doesn't identify what variation or model it is.

I looked when I first researched it, they're next to unobtainable unfortunately.
