The original 1996 or so 444 Ultra Hunter was 1:38", but when it was reintroduced in 2007, Marlin/H&R originally planned on it being 1:38", but the Marlin/H&R Marketing manager had eyes on this forum and I had his ear, and we persuaded him to have it changed to 1:20" before it went into production and so it is 1:20".

So...HOW is the rifle/barrel identified as to twist or build date or...I thought H&R was defunct????

I have several NEF rifles/barrels and also a 1-38 Marlin 336 but I've been looking for a 444 single shot rather than do another "Switch" stub barrel. Been looking at the CVA's on Buds...the stainless 25" for $354.00 looks very good but a McGowen 28" barrel would be ≈280'ish but a rental reamer would add ≈55 on top of that...lots of pros and cons.

Buying a new or used rifle has advantages...I just have to shoot it, NOT continue futzing around.

Thanks all for your input.

Being an extractor makes it late production, the old 1:38" would have been an ejector. New production SB2 frames have a CBA serial number prefix, made in Ilion NY, the only way to determine actual year of mfr would be to call H&R(Remington) in Madison 877-776-9292 and give them the serial number, CBA just denotes May 2008-on production, no specific year. Bought new last year makes it NOS, H&R closed the Ilion plant in April 2015, I suspect there was very little, if any production in 2015 after the lay-offs in 2014, 2014 was the last year of H&R catalogs publication, there was no 2015.

"Bought new LAST YEAR" doesn't say much...Ejector makes it a 1-20 unless someone is pulling something...buying on the net is iffy...not dissing anyone. SB2 CBA receivers are available on several online places, and barrels also so...

I knew H&R was gone but didn't know when...sad day.

Thanks Quick...you Doo know your stuff.

H&R has never made an SB1 444 Marlin that I've ever seen, that SB1 CAC frame didn't come from the factory with a 444 marlin barrel, if it did, someone at Ilion really screwed up, it may have been a 44 mag and was rechambered to 444 Marlin later, but I certainly wouldn't sell it as a 444 Marlin factory rifle. Is there any marking on the right side of the frame? Do the last 3-4 numbers of the frame serial number match the numbers on the left side of the barrel underlug?

Quick, is the 444 safe on an SB1? I would think they are much higher pressure than a trapdoor 45/70.
