who's had a chance at the doves ?

i've sure wanted to go. already put my plug and
correct choke back in a week ago. i've seen maybe 20-30
on the power line behind the house each evening.
the birds and the deer sure know exactly when
the season starts.

Be thankful you have a dove season. Here in Michigan we're not allowed to hunt them because they're classified as "songbirds"!

A few years back our legislature passed a bill establishing a season on them - good news. Bad news - Humane Society spent millions fighting it, managed to get it on the ballot for a vote of the people. HS had a massive ad campaign mainly directed at the liberal/democrat population centers in the southeastern part of the lower peninsula. Season was voted down in the general election - just not enough votes in the rest of the state to override the big urban population down there.

People down there are so ignorant they think the doves they see on their birdfeeders are the same ones every year! They don't have a clue of what the normal mortality rate of doves is. But, hey, they're liberal democrats so they don't have a clue about much of anything!

that's truly a shame. they're way plentiful here and itchin to be the
guest of honor at a cookout. the biggest problem for me these days
is a place to go. all of the places i could formerly hunt are rife with
new housing developments. if they only knew their foundation won't
be worth a bucket of pee by the time the heaving black farm dirt they're
built on gets through, i doubt any would have bought one of those houses.

i had a lady refuse me permission to hunt her back hay meadow some time back
because she said " doves are god's birds, and nobody should kill them" ??? :o
i asked her what she meant by that, and all birds were "gods birds" since
he created everything. she said that noah had sent a dove out, so that made
them "gods birds" and it said so in the bible. i had to remind her that god
told noah "all these shall be meat for thee" but she wasn't swayed. :o :o :o :o
oh well. . . . . . :(

Apparently it doesn't matter is there's a new neighborhood in your old hunting fields.
I seen on tv some guys were hunting a field of sunflowers and peppered at least one of the yards where a little pug dog took a pellet right between the eyes. He wasn't killed, but it left a mark. Game warden, or Sheriff, said they were within their rights to hunt that field as it was outside the city limits. But folks oughta be more aware of the fact that what goes up must come down.

Dove season starts September 12 here , We need a good cold front to push them south . One hunt near me is charging 100 dollars per gun for opening day on a 100 acre sunflower field .

The dove hunting here in west Texas has been really good. Only had one evening where we did not limit out.

This is an old thread.

You huntin this year Ranger?

I retired again, and with all this rain the farmers didn't get all their corn in.

One planted a bunch a milo so I've already lined it up this year for me and my 2 boys to hunt.

i have not dove hunted in a good while.
there used to be a bunch of land around here
that was easily accessible and you could get permission
easily for any kind of shotgun hunting.
unfortunately, most of that is now gone and built up in
half million dollar luxury homes and gated subdivisions
and "mini ranches" and "ranchette estates".
folks move in and have never lived where it's hot hot hot
in the summer, and have never smelled cow sh*t and
heard a shotgun go off and run the teeny farm roads
'till they're tore all to crap.
used to be there was a lot of accessible deer hunting
to be had too, but so many have moved here that are
willing to pay outrageous lease prices that all the cull
hunting that we used to get for free or for labor trade-out
is now history. there's places i can remember going in
west and southwest Texas and filling our tags in a day with
does and cull bucks that would cost a thousand on up
for those same kind of "undesirable" animals.

i've been seriously thinking about just going back to
small game (squirrels and bunnies) for a year or so
and see if this fad hunting dies off some.
my long time hunting bud has gone to strictly fishing
for the most part, and i may get back to that.
i don't guess i'd ever get a thrill out of paying a couple
of grand to pop a big buck just to post online like so
many do these days. i can buy a lot of premium meat
at the grocery store for what some of these guys have
invested in their "necessary" gear and atv's and lease
fees and such.
