When I was there in 1973. It was a small base surrounded by mine fields. There was a tanker sunk in the harbor. It supplied all the fresh water into the base. Carriers and Destroyers and merchant vessels brought all the fresh water in. Jamaicans worked in the commissary and the PX.
We could take binoculars and see the coast line, and see the old hotels which were now only run down communist houseing.The old cars were cool, but they were having problems with parts. A lot of old Cubans lived there, they were refugees of Castro. They hadn't seen there family's in years.
